Let freedom ring EDWARD F MARONEY PHOTO CALL TO REMEMBER- As Deputy Chief Chris Olsen bows his head, Barnstable Fire Department Lt. EDWARD F MARONEY PHOTOS SHINING A LIGHT ON HISTORY - Dr. J. Wells McGregor, who served First Baptist Church inHyannis untilhis death in1898,is remembered in a stained glass window. "They're buckling," Ed Gagnon, chairperson of the board of trustees, said of the windows. "There are cracks in some of them, and they're missing pieces of lead. Some of the original glass panels have been replaced with small pieces and epoxyed." More than 20 years ago, Gagnon said, the windows were covered with sheets of Lexan to protect them from vandalism. The early ver- sions of that plastic material faded quickly and clouded up. "Our first priority is to repair the windows and get them back the original way they were so they'll last another 109 years," said Ga- gnon. "We'd probably cover them with new, modern Lexan with vents so it can breathe and look good for the next 40 to 50 years." A full restoration would be more costly than replac- ing the windows with clear glass (except for the two on the Main Street side, which conceal the balcony). That would be much more effi- cient for heating as well. Gagnon said the church has received bids rang- ing from $6,000 to $8,000 per window for clear-glass replacements and $13,000 or more per window for a full restoration. Outside sources of fund- ing are being considered , but some are out of reach. "We looked into the federal Register" of historic build- ings, said Gagnon with a smile, "but unless George Washington slept here, they don't like to deal with churches." Gagnon said he's talked with Hyannis Main Street Waterfront Historic Dis- trict chair George Jessop about the windows, espe- cially whether the town's Community Preservation Fund could be tapped. The church has sent the Com- munity Preservation Com- mittee a letter asking to be considered , and is waiting for a reply. The church has tried to work with the town as it redesigned Main Street, and Gagnon had compliments for Jessop and the engineer- ing department' s Steve Sey- mour for their assistance. "We're looking to improve the property, " he said, citing a new sign out front and a new fence. "What we are trying to do is look attractive and stay there," Gagnon said. "We don't want that building to turn into a restaurant. It wouldn't be the best thing for Hyannis. "Quite frankly, with up- keep and repair and main- tenance and day-to-day and year-to-year costs of that building for heat and electricity, it's very burden- some and becoming more and more so. We're fighting to stay there."
