The family made a challenge grant of $1 million. UHtEN TEAM - ineir pride is evident as Lorusso Building arcmteci Peter Fourtonunis of DiMella Shaffer, Inc., and 4Cs President Kathy Schatzberg display a mock-up of the anticipated certification of the structure asagold-levelLEED(Leadership inEnergyand Environmental Design) Green Building. It's expected to be the first LEED-certified public building in Massachusetts. C ape COd Community College's new Lyndon P Lorusso Applied Technology Building is de- signed to give nature -and students -a break. The $7 million, 27,000- square-foot addition to the West Barnstable campus was dedicated last Friday with nods to its energy con- servation capabilities as well as the opportunities it offers Cape Codders for up-to- date education in science- dependent careers. Project architect Pe- ter Fourtounis of DiMella Shaffer, Inc., ticked off the evidence, including a comparative annual reduc- tion in energy use of 35 percent -and water use by 85 percent -over standard systems. Twenty-five per- cent of materials used have recycled content, and 40 percent of those came from local sources, reducing the cost and energy expenditure attendant on long-distance transportation. Also, more than 90 percent of construc- tion waste was recycled and reused, rather than winding up in landfills. Once the state saw that the quest for LEED (Lead- ership in Energy and Envi- ronmental Design) certifica- tion was the correct path -and that took some doing, Department of Capital As- sets Management Comr. David Perini admitted -the program was adopted across Massachusetts. "This is the first LEED- certified public building in the state," Perini said. "It really did convince us we needed to get on board." That effort wouldn't have been enough to jump-start the building in a time of limited financial resources, however, and Perini was quick to praise donors such as Paul and Lila Lorusso and Frank and Maureen Wilkens. "Without them, this never would have happened," he said, citing the "warp speed" pace of construction that saw the building completed less than two years after the groundbreaking ceremony. "Paul and Lila always thought the greatest gift of the human heart is to reach down and lift someone else up," said family representa- tive Sid Davidson. He added that the Lorussos are proud CONTINUED ON PAGE A:9 4Cs LEEDs state with building Mother Nature can love
