Airport Sells Buildings As part of the cleaving up at the municipal airport nt Hyannis for enlarging the runway, increasing Its length by 200 to 300 yards, a public auction sale was held Friday morning. September 9, at which seven surplus , small buildings and a radio tower were disposed of. The sale was announced by George H. Mellen , Jr., chairman of the Airport Commissioners. The auctioneer was Frederick L. Hull of Hyannis. Schools Open On the opening day of school, September S, Barnstable schools showed a total registration of 1810 pupils, an Increase of 101 over a year ago. By Tuesday, September 13, this total had swelled by 40 more, making the total registration this year 1S50, which is above last year 's registration by 141. Broken down among the individ- ual schools, these figures are as follows: High School , 766; Elemen- tary Schools , Hyannis (Training School and overflow housed In High School Building), 502 ; Barnstable, 76; West Barnstable, 59; Center- vllle, 103; Osterville, 162; Mar- stons Mills, 106; Cotuit, 76. School Bus Law The school bus law will be rigidly enforced , says Harry W. Lawes, Jr., Chief of the Barnstable Police Force. Sheriff Donald P. Tulloch also called the attention of motor- ists to strict observance ot the law. As amended , the requirement is that a car shall stop, going in either direction, when approaching a school bus that has stopped for passengers getting out or in. The car may then proceed at a speed of not more than 10 miles per hour while passing the bus. Scallop Taking The opening date for taking scallops has been moved from No- vember 1 back again to October 1 for the Town of Barnstable, accord- ing to an announcement made by Chester A. Crocker, chairman of the Board of Selectmen. The state- wide legal date is October 1, but In- recent years the season has been held back locally until November 1 . Road Construction In conjunction with other towns of Cape Cod , Barnstable presented Its request for highway construc- tion at a meeting with the State Public Work s Department officials September 8. Total construction called for throughout the County Is $250,000, of which Barnstable asks for $30,000, as estimates of cost. With this, Barnstable desires to widen Yarmouth Road from Iya- nough Road , or Route 28, to the Town line, doing the work next year. Under Chapter 90, cost o£ this construction is borne half by the State, the other half by the Town and County. Bids have been called for by the State Public Works Department for the repaying of Main Street , Hyan- nis, from Ocean Street to the Yar- mouth line. Main Street west of Ocean Street wns repaved last year. Mid-Cape Hig hway State Public Works Commission- er William F. Callahan lias in- formed the Selectmen ami hlglv way surveyors of Cape Cod thai he hopes to award contracts during the next four to six weeks tor the next segment of the Mid-Cape High- way. This segment will stretch from Route 130, south of Sandwich, to Route 132, northwest of Hyannis, and would be comp leted by latter June or early July of next year. Veterans ' Housing Two contracts for financial as- sistance-amounting to $735,000 have been approved by Chairman Freder- ick W. Roche of the State Housing Board with the Barnstable and Webster Housing Authorities for the construction of low-rent veter- ans' housing projects at Hyannis and Webster. The Hyannis development will comprise 40 single frame dwellings. There will be a kitchen , living room, dinette, and both In each unit. Twenty-two units will have two-bedroom accommodations, and 18 units will have three-bedroom ac- commodations. The development will be located on Bearse's Way, and will be constructed at an esti- mated cost of $41S,000. When final plans and specifica- tions are approved by the State Housing Board , the local housing authorities will be authorized to proceed with the advertising for construction bids.
