Here is the main street of Hyan- nis, looking east from the corner of Pleasant and Main , about 1800. The church spire rising above is the old Congregational church, where now the Church Bell apart- ments rest. The Congregational Church was merged later with the Universalist , to form the present Federated Church . The first building, In the right foreground is the old Boston store, selling drygoods, and run by P. M. Crowell. Edward F. Maher was a clerk there once. Beside it is the hardware store of A. G. Cash, who was later succeeded by Myron Bradford . When these two stores burned down, in what was known locally as the Cash block fire , Mr. Cash erected a big new block which still stands. Behind the Congregational church is the roof of the dwelling which is now the Hyannis Inn building, and which then sheltered not only the Daniel Crowell residence but a shoe store on the lower floor , and the Hyannis bank on the upper floor. Note the long lines of hitching posts on both sides of the street. Tradition has It that Everett Child's horse rati away one time and mowed down the whole row on the left side of the street. town and any further instruction was to be had at a private semi- nary In the rear of the old Masonic temple. A part of this building Is now the front section ot the Cape Cod hospital. Soon alter Mr. Nye left the pri- mary school Miss Crocker opened a private school in the rear part of the building now used as the Chinese laundry. Here as a re- ward for good behavior the pupils were allowed to sit In the front room in pleasant weather which allowed them to look out and see what was passing on the street. District 17 haa as a schoolhouse, a building now used as a part of the freight station, so says Mr. Nye, with the old blackboard still on the walls. There were two school houses in District 15 located at what is now Sherman square and called the twin schools because they were built exactly alike although one was a little larger than the other, The boys attending the grammar school in District 18 were rather an unruly lot. In the summer they worked hard Ashing and in the win- ter they attended school because they had to rather than from choice. Boy-like they wanted their sport, and had it with their teachers, rul- ing them Instead of being ruled. Being strong they were willing to have trouble with their teacher and usually succeeded in so doing, often getting the better of him, so It was a constant struggle with the school committee to get teachers, they sel- dom lasted longer than one term. Principal L. M. Boody of the high school broke the record and from the start was "boss" ot hie school Instead of the boys It took a good deal of grit and muscle on his part, but as he possessed both, he won out even if he did take a bit of the clothing as a partial peace offering. Sometimes the desks -and even the seats went along when an unruly boy was yanked out in spite of his opposition. Mr. Nye retains very vivid mem- ories of the old ship chandler's stop that used to stand at the end of the wharf extending out into Lewis bay as well of the old fish flakes that used to line the shores of the bay upon which were spread fish to dry. He says that the boys used to crawl under them and oc- casionally when they were very hungry they would steal one of the half dried fish and eat it. Davis, Manager I 110 School Street Hyannis 41 ! 1 : Barnstable schools 75 years ago were rather primitive as compared with those for the children of to- day. A good example of the old time school is afforded by the lit- tle building on Main street , Hyan- nis, opposite Pleasant street, now occupied by the Colonial Candle Co., as a gift shop. This was formerly a primary school and here Charles H. Nye and numerous other sturdy citi- zens of Hyannis learned their A. B. C.'s through the painstaking efforts of Miss Louisa Crocker. This was so many years ago In Mr. Nye's life that he has lost much or nis recollections of events at this school, but as he re- calls it there were about nine pu- pils in the school who sat on ordi- nary chairs Instead of the com- fortable ones provided for short little legs now. At that time there were three schools in Hyannis in the three school district , 16, 17 and 18. The old Lewis Bay View Inn on School and South streets was formerly the 18th district school accommo- dating primary, intermediate and grammar schools, and having not far from 150 school children.
