POETRY ,
The Soul' s Befiance ,
I said to sorrow's awful storm ,
That heat against my breast ,
Page on—thou taayest destroy this form,
And lay it ]pw\f res#
Put still fhe spiritithaf now brooks
Thy tempest, ragjftg high,
Undaunted , on its Ittry look s
With steadfast eye.
3 said to penury's meagre train ,
Advance—your threats I brave,
My last poor life drop you may drain ,
And crush me to the grave,
Vet still the spirit that endures
Shall mock your force the while,
And meet each cold, cold grasp of yours,
With bitter smile ,
I said to cold Neglect and Scorn ,
Pass on^I heedwou not ;
You may pursue mk till my forrn
And being are forkot ;
Yet still the spirit wkich ypu see,
Undaunted by yont wifes,
Praws from its own fljbility
Its high-born smiles.
I said to Friendship's menaced blow,
Strike deep—m .^heart shall bear;
Thou canst but add one bitter woe
To those already there.;
Yet still the spirit that sjnstains
This last severe disjyfess ,
Shajl smile upon itsjAenest pains,
And scorn redr-ess- •
I said to Death 's npliftid dart ,
Aim sure—oh ! wh y delay !
Thou wilt not find a fearful heart—
A weak, reluctant prey ;
For still the spirit firm and free,
Triumphant o'er dismay,
Wrapt m its own eternity
js!hal(' srniling pass away.
No sable pall, no waving plume—
No thousand torch lig hts to illume ;
No parting glance , no heavy tear,
Js seen to fall upon the bier ;
There is not one of kindred cloy
To watch the cpffin on its way ;
No mortal form , no human breast,
Cares where the pauper's bones may rest.
But one deep mourner follows there,
Whose grief outlives the funeral prayer ;
He does not sigh—he does npt weep—
But will not leave the spdless heap.
'Tis hp who was fhe poor rnan's mate,
And made him.more content with fate ;
The mongrel dog that sharpd his crust
Js all that stand's beside his dust.
Be bends his listening head , as though
fie thought to hear a voice below ;
lie pines to miss that vojee so kind ,
And wonders why he's left behi nd.
The sun goes down , the night hiis como^-
He needs no (opd , lip seeks no home ;
But stretched upon the dreamless bed ,
With doleful howl calls back the dead.
The passjng gaze may cpldl y dwell
On a|l that polished marble tell ;
For temples built on church-yard earth
Are claimed by riches more,than worth.
But whx> would mark with rindimmed eyes,
The mourning dog that starves and dips 1
Who would notask-T-whP..would not crave
Such Jpyg and fajth to gu ard bjs grave?

The heart hits memories' that never die. Tho
rough rubs of the world cannot obliterate thrm.—
They are the memories* of bome—earl y home.—
There is si inag ic in tho sound, There is an old tree
under wliiiih the light hearted l>oy swung ninny a
day ; yonder the river in which he learned to swiii'i
there the house in which he knew a parent 's protec-
tio n ; nay, there is the. room in which he romped
wi th brother and sister, ajas i hurt in the yard in
which he must soon be gathered, overshadowed by
yon old church , whither , with-a j oyous troop lik e
himself , he has often foll owed his parents to worshi p
with , Hud hoar the good old m»n who ministered at
ihe al tar. Why, even the yery school house, a>socU
:itecj in his youthful dajs will) thoughts of tasks, npw
uomes to bring pleasant remembrances of many oc?
casions tl)at call forth some generous exhibitions of
noble traits of human nature, There is where he
learned to feel some of his first emotions. There,
perchance, he firs t inet the being who, by her love
find tenderness in life, bus made a home for himself
happ ier than that which his childhood knew. There
are certain feelings of humanity, and those too,amonp
the best that can find nn appropriate place for their
exercise, onl y by one's own fireside , There is a
privacy of that wln'ob. it was a species of desecration
to violate. He who seel^s wantonl y to invade it , is
nei ther more' nor less thanfla villtiip ; and hence
there exists no surer test of debasement of morals
ill n community, than the disposition to tolerate in
liny mode, the man who invades the sanctity of pri-
vate life. Jn the turmoi l of the world , let l|iere be
tit least one spot where the poor man may find affec-
tion and confidence which are not to be abused.
[Dr. EJawkes.
How solemn and humble are the feelings within
US, when we contemp late the brevity of human life !
Who can bear the tolling of yon bell breathing its
soft mournful cadence upon the silent air , without
remembering that he must one day die, and be gath-
ered to the dreary empire of the grave ! anil the
same (]irg«*lilc G sound may break the stillness of the
Itir when he also has shuffled off this mortal coil V—
Who bears with slow and measured tread the re-
mains of some felFow mortal to "the house appointed
(or all living, " without remembering that for him
likewise "t he mourners shall go about the street ?"
There is no mortal eye so keen sighted that it
may penetrate the obscure vista of the future , and
tell the houjtwhen life 's fitful fever shall be over.
We kno^when the different seasons shall roll
round—when spring, summer, autumn , and winter
shall visit the earth—but who can tell when to look
for death ?

Man 's Comfort and Woman's Blessing.
npHIS is the age of discoveries. The instantaneous
X transmission of news by means of the Electric Tel-
egraph, a few years ago, was treated with as much
doubt and derision as is now bestowed upon the great
Oxy-hydrogen Light and Heat Dissemator, of Paine.—
But the telegraph discovery is a matter of fact, wheth-
er Paine's succeeds or not. There is no doubt whatev-
er in the public mind , that the justly celebrated
German Lustral Washing Fluid
is as much a matter of fact as the laws of gravitation.
Indeed, it may well bo considered one of the greatest
blessings of the age, as wherever it is used.it turns that
curse of all days, "Washing Day ," into a day of
gratitude and peace, if the Genuine Washing Fluid is
used. But in consequence of the
RASCAEXY IMITATIONS ,
of all really meritorious articles with which the market
is flooded , it has become necessary to caution the pub-
lic against the many base and worthless counterfeits
got up to imitate the GERMAN LUSTRAL WASH-
ING FLUID, as many of the miserable imitations are
put up in bottles of a similar style, and the labels se
printed that they are well calculated to deceive the
purchasor ,and injure the hi gh reputation of a truly valu-
able article.
Indeed the Proprietors are credibl y informed that
certain individuals , possessed of more brass than brains
are now attempting the manufacture of a spurious ar-
ticle, which they will endeavor to palm upon the public
as the genuine article of J. W. Emery & Co.'s manu-
facture ! Remember, the genuine can only be obtain-
ed of this firm or their authorized agents.
