display's her character 's emotions
in every moment on-stage, show-
ing a mastery of ranges in mood
and stance.
Nancy Anderson acts as Syl-
via, Kate's foul-mouthed canine
counterpart. A dog is no doubt a
difficult role to play, but Anderson
pulls it off perfectly.Sylvia shows
off all canine traits, including the
less desirable ones. Anderson
shines in all of her scenes, whether
they involve worshipping her new-
found owner, yelling obscenities
at a stray cat, or sobbing over the
thought of moving in with another
family.
Sylvia's owner, Greg, is played
by Sam Freed, whose ability for
dynamic acting is key in this part.
Greg displays nearly as wide a
range of emotions as Sylvia, to
whom he is deeply attached. He
pouts over his wife's distaste for
the dog one moment, then launch-
es into lavish praise for the pup in
the next. Greg's naivete is perhaps
only surpassedby his love for Syl-
via, who he claims brightens his life
like no other.
Peter Quinn brightens the whole
production with his portrayal of
three characters. His first is Tom,
a dog owner who is all too eager
to share his questionable wisdom
with Greg. Next comes Phyllis, an
old friend of Kate's -yes, a female
friend. Quinn's depiction of a wom-
an is similar to that of the Monty
Python crew: strangely voiced
and hilariously overblown. Leslie
is Quinn's third role, and, like the
other two, proves to be a highly
comical character.The androgy-
nous marriage counselor brings up
laughs from the audience as soon
as he/she appears on stage.
The stage itself is simply set
with minimal scenery, designed by
Richard Chambers.It is beautiful,
however, and makes for quick scene
changes with almost no downtime.
A clever use of various objects in the
background, along with the arrange-
ment of furniture in the foreground,
allows for an immediate recogni-
tion of the location. The lighting,
superbly designed by Christopher
Chambers, provides a sense of time,
while the detailed city backdrop is
always a pleasure to view.
Matthew Pachtman worked as
the costume designer, selecting
excellent wardrobes for the vari-
ous characters. Greg dresses as
the average middle-aged American
businessman, and Kate's sleek
attire gives her a mature, profes-
sional air.Quinn's three characters
likewise have their own suitable
costumes -yes, he does wear heels
and a skirt as Phyllis. Sylvia's
costumes are the most varied, re-
flecting her level of cleanliness and
overall mood. She first appears in
rough, worn clothes, and later dons
a bright pink ensemble after being
professionally groomed.
Not often can a play be summa-
rized simply as a tale about a mar-
ried couple and a dog, but Sylvia
takes this mundane-soundingstory
and transforms it into a master-
piece. Between the script and
acting, the play is nothing less than
excellent. Instances of vulgar lan-
guage and mature subject matter
make this less suitable for younger
children, but anyone who does go
will enjoy it to the fullest.Whether
dog lovers or not, theatergoers will
no doubt love Sylvia.
Sylviais at the Cape Playhouse in Dennis on
Route 6A through Sept. 9,with performances
Monday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and
Wednesday and Thursday at 2 p.m. There's a
matinee Sept. 2 at 4 p.m. also. For tickets ($25
to $45), call 508-385-3911 or 1-877-385-3911.
