school. Leathers was and still
is known for these types of
projects, now having worked
all over the globe with more
than 1,600 playgrounds to its
credit.
She said that the commu-
nity effort from fund-raising,
organizingand liningup all of
the volunteerswas something
special to see.
"Whenwegotthere,weknew
we really missed something
extraordinary (the pre-con-
structionphase),"Cribarisaid
in an interview this week.
The followingyear,the fam-
ilymovedto Barnstable.While
lamentingthe somewhatrick-
ety playground equipment at
the school with another par-
ent,Cribaritold ofthe effort in
the towntheyhad come from,
and the process began.
"Inever thought that I'd be
the one organizingit,"Cribari
said. "Ineverorganizedabake
sale."
But there she was. Cribari
was not working at the time
and could devote her energy
to the project.
David Jones, then owner of
the Barnstable Bus Company,
donated a bus that brought
Cribari and others to Marion
to see a recently completed
playground there. Their chil-
dren played and the parents
planned,and soon Bob Leath-
ers wasinBarnstable for "De-
sign Day."He went from class
to class gathering ideas from
students,thenassemblingthat
eveningwithchildren and par-
ents to review the bidding.
A butterfly, a suspension
bridge, a boat, a wavy slide
and more ideas poured out of
the children, and were incor-
porated into the plan.
The school superintendent,
Dr. Edward Tynan, gave his
OK, and principal Jerry Guy,
who willattend the rededica-
tion, "was very supportive,"
Jane McCormick recalled.
The supplies,tools andpeo-
ple were assembled, and after
more than ayear of planning,
the playground went up over
four days in October 1986.
Leathers and Associates
had a model for how to make
it work, from fund-raising, to
materials donations to wran-
gling volunteers. "You just
did what the plan said and
it worked," said David Van
Kleeck, who was one of the
foremen on the project.
NancyMeager remembered
the discipline and organiza-
tion during the construction
days.
"If Hurricane Katrina was
here, we would have been all
over it,"she said, laughing at
her boast.
For the constructions days,
Cribari said that more than
2,000mealswere served to the
hundreds of volunteers,some
of whom came all four days,
some for maybe an hour.
Day care was provided as
well, so parents could work.
Childrenhelped sand wood,
soap nails, scrub tires and do
whatever non-construction
work they could. Cribari said
that having the children have
ownership in the project was
animportantpart ofthewhole
experience.
"This changed people 's
lives. Completely," Whitney
Wright said of the experience.
Hewas aforeman onthe proj-
ect, even though he had no
children at the school. Wright
said that he knew where he
wanted to raisehisfamily after
participatinginthe project. "I
moved here because of that,"
he said.
A time capsule was buried
under the playground,though
it took a little research and
recalltofigure outjust where.
That is planned to be opened
25 years after the construc-
tion, which means there may
be another ceremony in five
years. Anyone with thoughts
of digging around for the
capsuleshouldknowthat Mc-
Cormickbelievesit willtake a
backhoe to finally excavate it
when the time comes.
"It was pretty big," she
said.
Bob Leathers has since re-
tired to SanDiego,where he is
an award-winningquilter, and
his son runs the Ithaca, N.Y.-
based company.Asfate would
haveit,CribariwasatBoston's
Logan Airport last week and
swore she saw Leathers. After
spending time staring at the
man resembling him, Cribari
said she had to ask: "Are you
Bob Leathers?"
"Yes, I am," came the an-
swer. He remembered her,
and the project. He will be
in San Diego on the day of
the rededication, but wished
everyone well.
The rededication ceremony
is scheduled for Sept. 16 at 1
p.m. A reception follows at 2
p.m. at the West Barnstable
Deer Club on Old Stage Road.
All areinvited and welcometo
bring hors d'oeuvres to share.
