CONTINUED FROM PAGE A:12 iting Cape businesses where they felt they might find interested players. "We went to fire departments , police departments,evenlocalland- scaping companies ," said Burkey. "We've had a good response." So far the two have been able to establish four teams with players from across the Cape, with two more a pos- sibility if more men sign up. "We're alwayslookingfor good athletes," said Boardley. "We welcome them all." The league is open to men ages 18 and up. Games are nine-on-nine and will take place on a 100-yard field at the Barnstable Horace Mann Charter School in Marstons Mills on Sunday mornings. "It's the closest you'll get to actual football,"said Burkey, who noted that play is of- ficiated and can get pretty physical. "There 's a good deal of running, passing and blocking and it can be really competitive." A preseason game willkick thingsoff on Sept. 17whilethe regularseasonbeginsSept.24 and runs through December. Fans are more than welcome to cheer on their favorite teams from the sidelines. Although the Cape league closely resembles other US flag footballleagues, there will be one major difference. The CapeFlagFootballLeaguewill be keeping careful statistics on allplayers. "Nobody does this," said Burkey. "Stats allow players to track improvements and maybe up their competitive- ness. If someone sees that they're only a few yards from being the top [in a position] they might take it up a little, work harder." The league also has its own Web site where results, stats, news and other information will be posted and updated on a regular basis. "We want to make it a big deal," said Burkey."Andwewant to make it fun." Burkeyhopestheleague will attract men to the sport who share his love of the game. "Since I was a kid, I played football," he said. "I love it. I have very good friends dating back to high school that Imet because I played football." He hopes that the Cape league will provide an oppor- tunity for folks to meet under enjoyable circumstances, with a little competition thrown in for good measure. "It's so competitive, and so fun," he said. "It's something people can look forward to doing on a Sunday." To spice games up a bit more, weekly awards will be presented with more signifi- cant awardsto be given at the end ofthe season,whichcom- menceswiththe FlagBowlIhi December. "It's about brag- ging rights," said Boardley. Burkey doesn't have much free time between his job as apharmaceutical rep and the league, but it willallbe worth itwhenheplayshisfirst game. "Yes, it takes more work,"he said. "But the payoff is tre- mendous." Formoreinformation about theCapeFlagFootballLeague, visit www.capeflagfootball. com. Flag football league kicks off on Cape...
