On
the first day of school in
Barnstable on Wednesday
there were looks of bewil-
derment, excitement, and a few
tears. That wasjust the parents.
All throughout the seven vil-
lages of Barnstable children from
preschool to high school stumbled
out of bed, some groggily,some
happily, and readied themselves
for the official start of the 2006-
2007 school year.
Superintendent Dr.Patricia
Grenier spent the day visiting
schools throughout the district.
"For me, the first day was one of
the smoothest I have ever expe-
rienced," she said. "There were a
few minor glitches here and there,
but people were handling them.
Kids were in classrooms learn-
ing and seemed very happy to be
there."
At Hyannis East Elementary,
new principal Tom Larrabee en-
joyed the energy of the arrivalof
students. "We had a great first
day,"he said. "I'm just absolutely
thrilled to be here. Everybody has
made me feel so welcome."
Larrabee described the incom-
ing students as "eager and ex-
cited" noting that those attending
the Kindergarten orientation were
particularly giddy. "It's so much
fun to go down to the classroom,"
he said. "They were just beaming.
Very proud to be at school."
The morning at Hy East kicked off
witha school-wide welcome inthe
gymnasiumthat was translated into
Portuguese and Spanish for attend-
ing parents. "It's important to reach
out to everybody and make every-
body feel welcome,"said Larrabee.
At the Barnstable Horace Mann
Charter School in Marstons Mills,
the air held a mix of anticipation
and anxiety.While the new fifth
graders did their best to work past
the butterflies in their stomachs,
the sixth graders adjusted to their
place as leaders in the school.
Principal Kara Peterson wel-
comed everyone to their first day
via the PA system, and offered the
three keys to success at BHMCS.
"Do your homework every night;
Do the best you can in your
classwork -make it work you are
proud to turn in; and treat others
with respect -show tolerance for
everybody."
"It's a mix of apprehension , ex-
citement, nervousness and renew-
al today," said Peterson. "It takes
them a little time to settle in."
BHMCS student Kat Fenn
was certainly one of the excited
kids as she was the winner of the
Marstons Mills Library's summer
reading contest and was treated
to a ride to school with pals in
a stretch limousine from Pride
Limousine.
To help students with the transi-
tion back to school, the folks at
Barnstable-West Barnstable do
their best to maintain a sense of
peace. "We try to have a real calm
introduction into a routine," said
Principal Frank Gigliotti. "That's
important for the kids."
As for what the school year will
bring, Gigliotti summed it up
appropriately when he compared
each year to a chapter in a book. "3
don't know what this chapter will
hold," he said. "If the kids leave at
the end of the year happy and hav-
ing learned, then it will be a good
chapter."
