Bird-biting species tests
positive, low threat to
humans at this point
By David Still II

A mosquitosample from Marstons Millstested
positive for eastern equine encephalitis (EEE),
according to Barnstable Health Director Tom
McKean.
The good news is that mosquitoes species
collected in this sample, culeseta melanura , are
known to bite birds, not mammals, accordingto
Gabnelle Sakolsky of the Cape Cod Mosquito
Control Project. She added that a trap specifi -
cally designed to trap mammal-biting mosqui-
toes has shown very few insects at all.
"There 's nothing flying that's biting mam-
mals," she said.
That's a different scenario from what's seen
off-Cape , where aerial spraying was conducted
in the last two weeks. She said that mammal-
biting mosquitoes were detected in the areas
sprayed.

By Edward F. Maroney

Barnstable 's accessory af-
fordable housing program has
brought 137 units all the way
to state certification over the
last few years , but every now
and then , there 's a glitch.
Aimee Guthinger of Holly
Hill Road in Centerville wants
to convert a small structure
built as a pool house into an
affordable accessory apart-
ment. The town'sgrowth man-
agement department vetted
the request and sent it on to
the zoning board of appeals.
The ZBA's chairman , Gail
Nightingale , sits as hearing
officer for such requests , and
her decisions are reviewed by
the full board.
The process came grinding
to a halt at last Wednesday 's
hearing, when Nightingale
continued the hearin g to
Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. Attorney
David Lawler, who 's repre-
senting some of Guthinger 's
neighbors opposing the
plan , urged that Night -

It's been 20 years since a castle
was built behind Barnstable-West
Barnstable Elementary School, and
the people who helped make that
happen through ahuge community
effort are planning again.
On Sept. 16,the community play-
ground committee will rededicate
the structure they and hundreds
of others helped build two decades
ago.
Members of the planningcommit-
tee sat down to recall the project
last week, laughing, remember-
ing and noting how much they've
changed since then.
What all of them remember most
is to whom credit for the idea and
the effort should be given: Nancy
Cribari.
She was new to the village, but
brought an idea from the home in
upstate New York that brought
the BWB and greater Barnstable
community together.
While living in East Bloomfield,
N.Y.,about 20 miles south of Roch-
ester, Cribari and her husband
weren't terribly involved in the
community, but they decided to
participate in the construction of
a Robert Leathers and Associates

Former nursing facility
due for makeover
By Edward F. Maroney
emaroney@barnstablepatriot.com
Developer Joe Keller is promising to make
a "first-class" office building out of the old
Greenery on Lewis Bay Road and South
Street in Hyannis.
The former nursing facility, which has a
commanding view of Hyannis Inner Harbor
from its top floor, willundergo a "100 percent
renovation ,"according to Keller. He expects
to complete the purchase of the buildingwith
hispartners,CharlesDoe and Robert Carleton,
within 30 days. The Town of Barnstable has
the property assessed at $6.44 million.
Plans are to market The Greenery (the
name will remain) as medical office space or
a location for high-tech business.
"If at the marketing stage we don't find any
medical or high-tech office tenants at all, then
we might consider adding floors and making
it 100 percent residential," Keller said. "I
personally think the highest and best use is
office and medical."
