Turning tide in fight against breast cancer
Fundraiser an
event of hope
and prevention
By Kathleen Szmit
kszmit@barnstablepatriot.com
There has been much talk
in recent months about the
occurrence of breast cancer
on Cape Cod.Potentialcauses
have been speculated on and
maps are being drawn to
help researchers get a bet-
ter feel for the scope of the
problem.
Next Saturday,breast can-
cer will again be in the spot-
light, but instead of causes
and counts,this event willfo-
cuson amuchmoreimportant
aspect of the illness: hope.
On Aug. 19 from 7:30 a.m.
into the afternoon , more
than 300 people from all
walks of Massachusetts and
New England life will take
up paddles, lace up sneak-
ers, and don their swim gear
in the fight against breast
cancer as they participate in
the seventh annual Against
the Tide fundraiser for the
MassachusettsBreast Cancer
Coalition (MBCC) and the
Silent Spring Institute.
Participants can complete
a one-mile swim, a two-mile
kayak, or a three-mile walk
in Nickerson State Park in
Brewster. Not only does the
event raise money for breast
cancer awareness and pre-
vention, but it offers those
touched by cancer a chance
to celebrate life.
"Italkto almosteverybody,"
said CherylOsimo,co-founder
and Cape Cod Coordinator of
Silent Spring,andanoutreach
coordinator for MBCC. "One
way or another, everyone
has been impacted in some
way."
Osimo knows daughters
who will walk in memory of
aunts, grandmothers and
mother. In a growing trend,
Osimohas alsocome to know
mothers taking part in the
event in memory of their
daughters.
Last year between a similar
event in Hopkinton and the
Cape Cod fundraiser, more
than $150,000wasraised,with
the majority of funds going
toward prevention research.
"Shouldn't more of afocus be
onprevention?" asked Osimo.
"Ithink what draws people to
this event is that people are
finally catching on to what
we're all about and that is
prevention."
As a woman who has had
breast cancer, Osimo is pas-
sionate in her support for
Against the Tide. She is es-
pecially motivated not only
by her own experiences, but
by the potential future that
could await her daughter. "It
saddens methat mydaughter
is21and we don't have allthe
answers,"she said.
Nevertheless , Osimo is
pleased with the accomplish-
ments of MBCC and Silent
Spring. "I am very proud of
the work that MBCC and
Silent Spring have done,"
she said. "They are the lead-
ers of cutting-edge research
throughout the country."
It is that research that
makes next Saturday's event
so vital, as Against the Tide
is a major source for research
funds. "Themoneywillbeused
for educational outreach and
research for Silent Spring,"
said Osimo.
Unlike other breast cancer
fundraisers,Against the Tide
requires a relatively small
registration/sponsorship fee,
and isnot affiliated with com- .
mercial organizations that
some feel muddy the waters
of breast cancer awareness.
"We want to challenge the
commercialization of breast
cancer," said Osimo, noting
that many corporations who
support breast cancer fund-,,
raisers are the same corpo-
rations creating potentially
cancer-causing chemicals. .
Ideally, Osimo would love
to see a day when events
such as Against the Tide no
longer need to happen. "I am
hoping that we can, as soon
aspossible,not have to worry
about being diagnosed with '
breast cancer," said Osimo.
"I would love to not have to
think about children having
breast cancer.Someoneneeds
to takethis on and that'swhat
we are doing."
Against the Tide is still seeking
participants for the Aug. 19 event. Call
1-800-649-6222 or visit www.mbcc.
org/swim.

The system is creeping to-
ward exceeding its annual
withdrawal permit. The state

85 gallons per day per capita.
Venturasaid it makes more
sense to ask people to save
water than to take apotential
fine for exceedingthe permit-
ted withdrawalamount.
The problem, according to
Ventura,isthat the per capita
figure is based on year round
population, not seasonal,
which hits hard in the town's
westernmost village.
Both issues are recognized
by the department and the
board of water commission-
ers.The engineeringfirm Tata
and Howard is already on the
case and hasnotified the state
Department ofEnvironmental
Protection that Cotuit would
like an increase in its with-
drawal permit.

struct anew, larger tank have

saidthat another attempt may
be made sooner than the next
annual meeting in May 2007.
Such amove has not yet been
decided by the board ofwater
commissioners.
Until then, Cotuit water
customers are asked not to
use water outside between
9 a.m. and 6 p.m., to water'
odd-numbered homes on
odd-numbered days and even-
numbed homes on even-num-
bered days, and to installrain

A hinged wire grill basket is best for cooking whole
fish such as snapper, trout or salmon. It also works
well for fillets of tender fish such as perch, snapper,
catfish or flounder.
Firm fish, such as tuna or salmon can be cooked directly
on the grill if handled carefully Skewer small shellfish
such as shrimp or scallops on metal or water-soaked
wooden skewers or cook them in a grill basket.
Happy grilling from your friends as Osterville Fish.
And remember, if you don't feel like cooking - don't
worry - we do! Come on down and pick up dinner,
we're open 7 nights a week
