POETRY [For the Barnstable Patriot.] Janes On the.death o f Elvina G. Smith, aged G years 5 months. We have losrthoe, sweet babe fro m our circle of Iovc> Ami I'uii il or:cs aru weep ing above t hy lone gra ve; Yet we know ti'.im an Heil u> that heaven a. ove, To the bo-soMi of him wiio m mortality save. Thou wast taken ill eliiMiiood .when life was the bri ght- And o>ir th y young pathwa y no d.trk .shadehail flown: Thy smile more angelic , th y heart was the lightest , And God has recalled thee to heaven , th y home. Yet we shall miss thee sndl y here, And th y mother 's heart is weeping, As o'er her cheek steals many a tear , ¦And sad her voice th y mime repeating, The treasured child of each loved one ' --¦ Who filled thy happy home ; To thee thy mother 's heart most clung, »•¦ With thee her joys were one. The father on the wild , blue deep, i "Thought of his darling child , j And .voices strange come in his sleep, *:"Thou 'Il see no more thy child." He hasted o'er the rolling "sea. i He sought-his happy home:— I But no sweet babe hounds to his knee- That babe from earth has j:one . Beneath the garden 's su mmer shade, His little daushter 's form is lying: The turf upon her breast is laid , Her spirit rests with the und ying. In that bright world of joy and love , To-,whieh our hopes in sorrow turn : J?j-ien' ds of the lost, ye'll meet above , Her whom on earth your hearts now mourn. I Helen P. Mills. Chatham, July 28th, 1830, BY CHARLES SWAIN. If you wish to he happy at home , Then your heart to that wish is the door: Keep it open—and angels may come, And enter and dwell evermore ! O'er each feeling a ray will he cast, , As if lit by some magical gem ; Youwj ll think you've found heaven at last, But the angels have brought it with them. Keep it open—ami friendshi p and love And happ iness—all—will be thine : A gleam -of. Efyftiuin above ! A spark of: the spirit divine! Keep it shut—and then Pride will have birth, And Ejiyv , and all we condemn ; You will think you 've perdition on earth , Pride and Envy have broug ht it with them. The world vvill seem colder each day ; 'Tis an image those demons but throw ; Cast your pride and your envy away. t And the world's seeming coldness will go. ' O,''tis'Well to be happy at home , • Anil to this your .own heart be the door j Keep it open , and angels may come, And enter and dwell evermore. Ope n - H e a r t e d . LADIES' DEPARTMENT, Ladles Beware. T/he annexed eight cautions to young ladies, are almost as important as the ten commandments laid down in the good hook. We quote them for the benefit of our young and unsophisticated maiden readers, who may not yet have "told" their love ;— and who will ,we trust ,pay due attention lo the sound advice hero given , ore they tie the "silken cord ," for betteror for worse, ' 1, Never marry a man for wealth , never make moriey an object of marriage. "Wilt tliou set thy eye upon that which'is not ?'1 A man 's life consist- eth not in the things ,which he possesseth. 2. Never marry a fop, or one who struts about da ndy lik,e, in his gloves ami ruffles , with silvered can?, ithd rings on his fingers. Beware ! there is a trap ! 8, . Never marry r ni ggard , a closefisted , mean , sordid .w r/'tch, who saves every penn y , or spends grudgingly. Take care, lost he stint you to death. Beware of the trap. 4. Never marry a stranger , or one whose char- acter is not known or tested. Some females jump rigjit into the fire with their eyes wide open, 5. Never marry a mope or a drone , one who drawls and dragg les throug h life , one foot after an- other, and lets things take their course ; "drowsi- ness shall clothe a man in rags." 8. Never marry a man who treats his mother oi sister unkindl y or indifferentl y; such treatment is a sure indication of a mean and wicked heart . A young, man guilty of such meanness ,will never make a good husband. Beware ! ladies. Do you see a youn g man . that 's attentive , affectionate to his aged mother and sisters, attentive to all I heir wants with filial love and tenderness , virtuous , pure and lovel y in his deportment , fear not , his worth is above ru- bies. 7. Never, on any account , marry a gambler , a spend-thrift , a Sabbath-breaker , a profane person , one who in the least speaks lightl y or carelessly of God, and hol y things. Such a man , whatever qual- ifications tic may possess, can never make a true husband. Beware, 8. Never marry a sloven , a man who is negligent of his person and dress, and of filthy habits. The external appearance often indicates the state of the mind and heart. With the pure all things are pure. How strange that the patience of Job should be considered so remarkable , when there are so many mothers in the world whose patience equals , if it does not exceed , his. What would Job have done had he been compelled to sit in the house and sew, and knit , and nurse the children , and see that hun- dreds of things were attended to durin g the day.nnd ' hear children ury .and fret , and comp lain ? O,h0w would he have stood it if, like some poor women ', he had buen obli ged to raise a famil y of ten or twelve children , witho ut hel p, spending months , years—all the prime of life—in washing, scouring, scrubbing, mending, cooki ng, nursing children , faste' ned to his house and his offspring, from morning till ni ght , and night till morning, sick or well ,in storm'or sunshine , his ni ghts often rendered miserable by,watching over his children ? How could he have jfood all this.and in addition r0 all other troubles , the curses and even violence of a drunken companion ? Ilow could he ll.'ivo felt , after wearing out lijs ^vcry existence for his/tender offspring and a worthless companion , to be abused and blamed ? Job/endured his boils and losses very well for a sh'ort . time , but they did not. epdure long enoug h to test' (he length of his pniionce. Woman tests' her patience by a whole life of trials , and' she does not grumble at her burdens. We are honestly 'of the opinion that woman has more pa- tience than Job ; and insteadof say ing "the patience olJpb," we should say "the patience of woman. " Song.--O1i marry the man you love girls , if you can get him at all ; if he is rich as Croesus or as poor us Job.in his fall. Pray, do not marry for pelf.g iils , 'twill bring your souls into thrall ,but marry the man you ioyc , gills , 1! his purse is ever so small. Oh never many a fop, girls , whether he's little or tali , he'll make a fool of himself and yon , he knows noth- ing well but to di awl. But riiarry a sober man , girls , there are a few left on this ball ; and you 'll never rue the day, girls, th at you ever married at all. Woman's Patience. Hayes, one of the firm of T. R. G. )Pag-c, Lath, Me., says he never sold any Medicine that gave such general satisfaction ; ho has known many to, be cured by it of bad humors, &c, after they had been giv- en up as incurable by all their friends. Capt. Joseph Holly, of whale ship Erie, which sails from Ifairhaven , recom- mends Brown's Sarsaparilla and Tomato Bitters to all seafaring men.
