SUCCESS STORY -Kathy Aspden stands outside her $70,000 three bedroom, one-bath cottage
as final details are completed in advance of an occupancy permit.
It was 8:30 a.m., one hour before opening
time.KathyAspdensatonthe edgeofachair
in a corner of the salon as the sun's rising
rays drifted lazily through the windows.
She leaned forward for added emphasis,
gesticulating with gusto as she recounted
the daysheandher 3-bedroom housedrove
down Route 28.
"I had the best time ... it was incredibly
interesting,"saidAspden,ownerofthe Salon

work, coffee klatch, investment incubator,
networking center and, oh yes, hair salonat
River Road'sconfluence withRoute 149and
Main Street in the wee Village Center.
"Iinsisted,"she continued, "onridingthe
first 20 miles with Bob Hayden."
Hayden, of Cotuit, is the Cape's fabled
mover of big thingslikehouses. He fell prey
to Aspden's contagious enthusiasm, she
said, and agreed to haul a 692-square foot
cottagefrom Chathamto herlot at 50River
Road and thereby sate her entrepreneurial
appetite and recycling bent.
The logisticsof the move isastoryinitself,
as she learned ridinginthe advance carwith
Hayden."There wereutilitiescrewsandstate
police workinginunisonblockingstreets and
lifting wires. The lead carhad alongpole with
a plastic bottle on top just a bit higher than
the top of the house and we would check
when we went under wires how much room
there was for the house to go under."
Shesaidshemarveledat Hayden'splanning,
particularlythe effortsthat wentintoassuring
the cottage from Chathamwouldfit snugly on
the new foundation inMarstons Millsand the
slow exercise of going through the center of a
roundabout in Harwich. No room for error.
Now, house and foundation are one.
Wiring, septic and plumbing are complete.
The property awaits landscaping and a
certificate of occupancyfrom townbuilding
inspector TomPerry.The tenaciousAspden
now has time to reflect.
"I'man avidrecycler,"shesaysafter offer-
ing coffee perking in another corner of the
salon located in the front part of her home
adjacent to the cottage. "When I learned
during a hair appointment that my friend
and client Mary Benoit and her husband
weregoingto demolishthe cottageifnobody
wanted it, I knew I had to do something."
That launched an effort that not only
transplanted a house, it exposed the story
behind the story -Aspden'suncanny "luck
with contractors,"she says, and her ability
to jump through regulatory hoops with a
smile and an appreciation of help from any
person or quarter.
Most people have horror stories to tell
about contractor goofs and snooty bureau-
crats in the course of complex projects.
Not Aspden, who did most of her sub-
contracting. "Itellpeople what Ineed right
up front. I would go to some contractors
and right out ask them for a'work-for-food'
estimate. I think they appreciate that and

Summer is here and
there's a lot going on in
the village of Marstons
Mills. Before I fill you in
on the wonderful activities
happening, I'd like to advise
you of the upcoming vote to
approve additional funding
for the Hyannis Youth &
Community Center. Coun-
cilors have been briefed on
the need and the sources for
these funds, and there will
be a public presentation at
the Aug. 17 meeting before
thevote.Thetownhasmade
a commitment to provide
a safe place for our young
people and all the citizens
who will use this space, and
I hope our town'slegislators
will join me in supporting
this request. Along with
many other people , I've
dreamed of the 2007 ground-
breaking ceremony for the
Hyannis Youth & Commu-
nity Center. As the late Dr.
Eugenia Fortes was fond of
saying, "It's the right thing
to do." Let's do it!
Marstons Mills Village
Day will be held on Sept. 10
this year starting at noon.
There 's something new and
different -a "theme"for the
day -M & Ms! It's a play on
the village name, and in ad-
dition to the usual fun fare,
there willbe More Music and
Magic this year and other
added entertainment, end-
ing with the Marvelous Lib-
erty Hall ChickenBarbecue.
Bring the family and enjoy
the Merry-Making!
The Master Gardeners
have been busy over by
Long Pond Farms, and this
year they've expanded their
youth Community Gardener
program to accommodat e
more young gardeners. Stu-
dents from Marstons Mills
and other nearby villages
and towns are enjoying the
opportunity to grow their
own flowers, fruits and veg-
etables this summer under
the expert instruction of
the Master Gardeners! This
year they also won ribbons
at the Barnstable County
Fair and they were recently
photographed to be part of
a book, Gardens of New Eng-
land , due out in 2007. Their
Open House (Garden!) is
Aug. 21 from 3:30 to 5 P.M.
and the public is invited to
attend. Iwas able to be there
last year, and it was such a
pleasure to see the pride on
the faces of the youngpeople
as they displayed the fruits
of their labor.
Another popular event
that isreturning to the Mills
is aFly-In Celebration at the
Cape Cod Airfield on Aug.
19 from noon to 6. Airfield
director Chris Siderwicz
promised another one after
the immensely enjoyable
Grand Opening Celebration
two years ago. There will
