KATHLEEN SZMIT PHOTOS OPEN 'HOUSE' - Folks from around the Cape enjoy the open house at the new location of Pilot House on Yarmouth Road in Hyannis. The event featured housetours andtestimonialsfrom residentswho have achieved recovery with the help of Pilot House and its programs. DOING IT THE COWBOY WAY - Richard Cowboy McBride, known by his unique middle name, has been sober two years thanks to the benevolence of Pilot House staffers. Once a homeless alcoholic,McBride is now writing a book about his experiences. CONTINUED FROM PAGE A:1 of responsibilities both in and out of the house. At the house they must do regular chores , keep their rooms clean , prepare their own meals, and attend substance abuse meetings. Outside the house they are provided with medical and psychological care to better help them address their medical and addiction issues. "When in recovery, people feel they get hit all of a sudden with a lot of problems,"said Fontes. "Our programs are able to touch base and help people with those problems , where if they were out on the street they would end up drinking again." "I was the biggest drunk in Hyannis," said Bishop. "It's a permanent , lousy, conniving, stinking disease. Betsey came looking for me, brought me out of the woods and back here. They taught me the right way to go." During the open house , attendees , including Town Councilor Ann Canedy, were treated to tours and had opportunities to talk with shelter residents about their experiences. The need for greater funding was a re- sounding theme. Right now Pilot House is primarily an overnight center that closes between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. due to lack of funding. There are not enough staffers to allow Pilot House to remain open 24 hours. "Our commitment is to find funding to be able to remain" open to provide meaningful activities during the day said Fritzinger, not- ing that the closure forces many residents into the streets where they face the possibility of falling back into old habits, a frighten- ing prospect for those trying hard to recover. It is the generosity of oth- ers that keeps Pilot House afloat. Were it not for the un- selfish donations of people such as Bob Casey and Izzy Thompson , who provided much of the furnishings in Pilot House , the establish- ment might not exist. Thankfully, for folks like Bishop and McBride ,it does. "I am so grateful,"said Bish- op. McBride could not agree more. Pointing to a cozy hammock strung between two trees in the side yard, he smiled broadly. "It don't get no better than that."
