BREAKWATER BAKING Reward for a long hot walk measured in solitude , scup By David Still II dstill@barnstablepatriot.com DAVID STILL II PHOTOS CASTING ABOUT - Mike, a day visitor from Boston, was having good luck with scup at the end of the Hyannisport breakwater Wednesday, THE LONG WALK - Getting to the tried and true fishing waters at the end of the breakwater takes good shoes, a little balance and a little time. As the thermometer crept into the 90s and the heat index blasted above 105 degrees Wednesday, a lone figure could be seen trying his luck with rod and reel at the end of the Hy- annisport jetty. It's a long and sometimes slip- pery walk from Eugenia Fortes Beach to the end of the breakwa- ter, made all the more uncomfort - able for those toting tackle by oppressive heat. A steady south- westerly wind off the water makes things more bearable, but make no mistake, it gets warm. The lone fisherman Wednesday was Mike, a native of the Domini- can Republic living and working in Boston. He works evenings, leav- ing his days free to travel south and fish. He said there were fisher- men everywhere last Saturday, but that was then. As he grew up in the Dominican, the temperature was familiar to Mike, but it's still "no good." He worked a single line with two hooks baited with sea worms, and his bucket was just starting to fill with scup a little before noon. Things were picking up, as he reeled in one on each hook. Last weekend, he and the mul- titude of fishermen saw an otter "about the size of a baby" swim around the end of the three-quar- ter-mile-long jet ty for about 20 minutes. The breakwater itself is has been a Hyannisport fixture go- ing on 180 years. The first section dates its initial construction in the late 1820s, and its condition and rusted-through iron connectors provide evidence of that age. Ac- cording to Old Hyannis Port , the fine 1968 history by Paul Fairbanks Herrick and Larry G. Newman, the first federal money for the break- water, $10,500, came in 1826, with subsequent appropriations and extensions over the next 90 years. The breakwater was completed to its present length in 1915 with a total tally in excess of $300,000. It still shows its scars from Hurricane Bob, which blew out a couple sections near the end in 1991. These sections require some climbing, and Mike's leg bears a still-bleeding reminder that one must take care to reach the end. There have been plans on and off, mostly off now, for the town to coordinate repairs with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, but funding and attention remain insufficient.
