MORAL READINGS. Home and Women. Jf ti)ore !vis ever been a more touching or elo- quent eulqg itim upon the charms of home , and its dearest t reasure, woman , than is conta ined in the following extract from the Christian Enquirer ,it has Hat been oiir gqod fortune tfi meet it: " Qn r h,omes ; what is their corner stone but the vir tue of a woman , and on what does, social well be- ing rest hut on our homes ? JJust' we not trace all other blessings of civiliged life to th'e doors of our private dwellings ? Are not our hearthstones guard- ud hy holy forms of cqnjuga l ,ftlial and parental love , the cqrner stones of church and state ; more sacred than either , nwe necessary than both ? 3>t our tem.p leg crumble , and, our academ ies decay, let our public edifices , our halls of justice, arid our capitals of slate be leveled with the dust j but spare our homes ! I4et no socialist invade them with his wild plans, af pommunity ! Man did nqt invent and he cannot improve or narogute them . I A private shelter to cover in two hearts dearer to Pitch, othpr than all in the world ; hi gh walls to e^- (ilude tl|p profane pyes of every human .bei ng, seclus- ion enoug h for children to feel that mdthcr is a hol y and i) peculiar name^— this is home an<3 here is the birthp lace of every virtuous impulse , and every sa- cred thoug ht. Here the church and the state must CQPie fqr their origin and support. Oh ! spare our borne j The lovp we experience tfipre gives us our faith in an infini te ,goodness ; the purit y and disin- terested tenderness of home is our foretaste and our earnest of a better world. In relations {here estab- lished ami fostered , do we find throug h life the chief solace and joy of existence. What friends deserve the name compared with those whom a birth right gave us ? Qi)e mother is worth a thousand friends ; one sister truer than twent y int imate companions- We who have played on the sanip hearlh , under the li ghts of the saine smile , who date back to the same scene and season of innocence and hope , in whpss veins riins (he same blood , do we not find that years onl y make more sacred ap<{ more important the tie that binds us ? Coldness may spring up, rjistirn.ee may Separ ate , different sp here? may divide; but thene who can love anythin g, n)io cont inue to love at al l, must find ilistt Iho friends whom God himself gave , are wholl y unlike any we can choose for our- selves , and that I he yearnings for these is the strong spark jf) our exp iring affection ." A jus t man is always simp le. lie is a map of di- rect aims and purposes. Therp is no perp lexity in his motives, and , hence , there is no j arring or dis- oordsnpy in hi s character. Up wishes to do right, and in mast ei|ses lie does it ; he may err , bu t it is by mistake of jud gment , and not by ' perversity or inte ntion: The moment his jud gment is enli ghte n: ed , his action is corrected. Setting before himself, always, a clear and worth y epd , he will never pur- sue it by any concealed or unworth y mean s. We may carry our remarks for illustr ation , both into pri- vate an.4 public life. Observe such a man in his home s—there |s a; charm about him , which no artifi- cial grace has over had the power to bestow ;. there is a sweetness , I had almost said ,a music in his man- ners, which no. sentimental refinement has ever giv- en. IJis speech, ever fresh from purity and rectitude of thought , controls all that are within its hearing , with an UItfe|t , ar,d yet resistless sway. Faith ful lo every domestic , as to his religion and his God , he would, no rtrqro prove recreant to any loyally of home, than he would blaspheme the fllaker in whom he believes, or (hat he would forswear the Heaven in which he hqpes, Fideli ty and truth to those boun4 by love and nature lo his heart , are to hi m mast sacred princi ples; iliey are in the last recesses of his moral bei ng, they are imbedded in Ihe life ot his life ; and to violate them , or even think of vio- la ting them., would seem to him as. a spiritu al exter= (fli nation, the suicide of his soul. J?oris such a man unrewarded , for the goodness (hat ho so, largely gives is la rgely paid back to him ngain j mid tho' the current of his life is transparent it is not shallow ; on the contrary, it is deep and strong. The river that fills its uhannel ,glides smoothly along jn the power of its course j jt is the stream which scarcel y covers the ruggedness of its bed , that is tur. tntlent an<1 noisy, With all this gentleness , there is exceeding farce j with all this meekness , the re is im- perative command ; but the force is the force of wis- dom i and the command is the command of love ,— And yet, tho auth ority which rules so effectually, never gathers an angry or an irritabl e cloud over the brow of the ruler ; and this sway which admits pf no resistance , does not repress one honest impulse of nature , one moment of the soul's hi»h freedom , one bound of joy from the heart 's unhidden glad- I1"ss, in tho spirits of the governed.—[Rev^iMr. tiilcs, A Just Man. WE beg to call your attention to a new article for Shi p's fastening, which we believe to be greatl y superior to any material now used for that purpose— YELLOW METAL BOLTS. P ' Although new in this market , they have been in ac- tive use in all the English Shi p Yards and Docks for a long period of time. The manufacturers , whose agents we are, were in- duced to make a small quantity last Spring, by the de- sire of several shi p-builders here to obtain ' a sample of them for their own use. The builders who have tried them , arc so . entirely satisfied with their character and worth , that thb manufacturers have resolved upon mak- ing them >n '"luge quantities and offering them for sale. Being firmer ^ than the Copper Bolts , they bear much harder driving-; and their composition prevents the formation of tlioj verdi gris so much comp lai ned of as natural to Coppejj; . Their resistance to corrosion caus- es them to wear m,Qre uniforml y and longer than Cop. per Bolts , and thefe musthave the preference over them.
