FAREWELL-Thisintricate shellcraft by LyndaSusan Hennigan isjust one of the sailor's valentines that will be displayedinthe Centerville Historical Museum's Sailor's Delightsexhibit. S ailors are generally thought of more as harsh seafarers than romantic souls, but the existence of sailor's valentines puts an end to that stereotype. An exhibit displaying con- temporary artists' valentines is taking place at ij wimwMMmmm\ . the Centerville Historical Museum Aug. 4 through Sept. 23. The show, titled Sailor 's Delights: Sailor's Valentines and Nantucket Baskets, is holding its opening reception duringCenterville Old Home Weekon Aug. 4 from 5to 7 p.m. The museum on Main Street is open Tuesday through Satur- day from noon to 4 p.m. Among the artists exhibit- ing are Lynda Susan Hennigan (www.lyndasusanhennigan. com) and Gayle Condit (www. sailorvalentines.com),Their Web sites offer a wealth of information about the seamen who crafted a unique gift. Sailors added the valentines to the list of gifts they brought home to their loved ones -. beginningin the early ¦ ^ nineteenth century. They gfjj were originally called |1li shell mosaics, as they II were made of detailed if " patterns of seashells, fre- Jp quently in the image of a W flower or heart. Some of the valentineshad words inscribed usingshells as well, displaying messages such as "Farewell"or "Think of Me." These works were housed inside of octagonal wooden boxes with a glass covering, which protected the delicate shells from harm duringtravel. Some sailors did in fact craft their own valentines to bring back to land, but the majority of valentines were purchased at island stopping points. Barbados was especially important in this industry of sorts, as it served as a promi- nent seaport where ships often stopped on long voyages dur- ing the nineteenth __ century.Natives A**-^-^ of the island. w M f P ^* created the WAW ^ 'k*-' valen- tines A and § sold I them to a Ameri- I can, I English, \\ and Dutch sailors, who would then present them to family members and loved ones back home. The amount of shellmosaics produced on Barbados and other islands dropped drastically in the late nineteenth century. The 1930s marked the start of collecting the mosaics, which became known as sailor's valentines duringthis time. Antique sailor's valentines are prized possessions today, and some local artists focus their work around these intricate crafts. "I saw my first Valentinein a museum on Cape Cod as a child and have always been fascinated by them," |irMf Hennigan reveals on '_Pl|f o. her Web site. Mak- ; WfcOl1 ^ ingthe valen- ^ tines"has ^fk become r j | my passion 1 and will be * ¦ tomorrow's ¦ heirlooms." *rjLV design and jpr technique r • has lived on through the years, and artists still work with shells in octago- nal frames. The frames are not necessarily wood- en boxes, howev- er; the valentines can be found as decorations in the surface of tables, chests, and other pieces of furniture. Randall Hoel, executive direc- tor at the CentervilleHistori- cal Museum, said a furniture maker is exhibiting a sailor's valentine in a coffee table. The pieces featured in the museum's display are "based on traditionalvalentines," said Hoel, although some artists take a more modern approach. Hennigan, for example, uses illustrations, antique photo- graphs, postcards, and other objects in her pieces. Condit "often uses antique lace in the centers and incorporates ideas from traditionalwork," ac- cording to her Web site. Pearls, sand dollars, dried flowers, and smallbaskets can also be found in modern renditions of sailor's valentines. Likewise, contemporary artists do not alwaysfollow the traditional setup of avalentine. While many do choose to work with symmetricalpatterns like those found in original sailor's valentines, a number of pieces are more modern in design, or even in premise. The valen- tines are no longer limited to dedications to loved ones; they can simply be gifts to friends, or sentimentalworksmeant to symbolize a special event. Sailor'svalentineshave become a part of the cultureon Cape Cod and the islands.Work- shops and classes are available for instruction in the creation of these intricate works, and kits are sold in stores and on-line. Scarves and blankets are adorned withthe images of the octagonal valentines. And, of course, the valentines themselves are prized for their beauty, whether they are con- temporary pieces or originals from the nineteenth century. mmJmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmwammmmwK/mmmmmmmm I RENE L.
