comes full circle
with spot in Cape
League

HOMETOWN HERO - Jared McGuire of Harwich grew up playing baseball,
and every other imaginable sport, on Cape Cod. Having now come full
circle, McGuire is enjoying this summer playing left field for the Hyannis
Mets. Along with Cody Crowell of Harwichport, who plays with the Brewster
Whitecaps, he is one of two Cape Codder in the Cape Cod Baseball League
this season.
Read
over the rosters
of most Cape League
teams and you'll find
that the players hail from
such faraway places as South
Carolina, Texas, and even
California. On all the Cape
League teams there are only
two players actually from
Cape Cod. Jared McGuire is
one of them.
McGuire, who resides with
his family in Harwich when
not attending Boston College
(where he majors in sociolo-
gy), started playing baseball
when he was a child. Unlike
most players, though, the
game was not his main focus
in the sports world. "I pretty
much played everything,"
he said. "Hockey, football,
baseball."
Hockey and baseball were
favorites growing up and he
recalled his father coaching
his local hockey team. Base-
ball, however, slowly became
his focus.
In high school he played for
Coach Fred Thacher at Har-
wich where he was named
the Boston Globe and Boston
Herald Player of the Year,
as well as the New England
Male High School Athlete of
the Year in 2003.
The accolades are many
for this stellar player who
was voted team captain dur-
ing his senior year. McGuire
was a South Shore League
All-Star from 2001 until 2003
and was even a top player in
soccer and hockey.
As a freshman at BC,
McGuire started in 11 of 16
games played. During one
match, BC was struggling
against opponent La Salle
and was down 10-0. McGuire
garnered his first collegiate
hit and earned BC their only
run of the game.
Last year, as a sopho-
more, McGuire received the
honor of Big East Player of
the Year, becoming the first
sophomore to win the award
since Brandt Ust of Notre
Dame claimed it in 1998.
McGuire more than earned
the honor, leading the Big
East in batting with .397.
He had a whopping 82 hits,
52 runs, and 41 RBIs. He
also led the league in stolen
bases, succeeding in 27 of 29
attempts.
This spring McGuire was
signed to a temporary con-
tract with the Hyannis Mets,
gaining full-time status dur-
ing their first practice.
"It's awesome," he said

Sunday marked amomen-
tous day inthe sport sworld.
Tiger Woods won the British
Open for the second year in
a row; American Floyd Lan-
dis took the Tour de France;
and the Cotuit Kettleers
retained the Patriot Cup
after defeating the Mets in
Gamfi 5.
The Cotuit bats were once
again on fire , taking down
the Mets ' pitching in a solid
6-4 victory that keeps them
firmly in first place in the
Western Division.
The Kettleers pounced
on Mets pitcher Matt Daly
early on. Reese Havens led
off the second inning with a
single, followed by another
single from Matt Angle.
With runners on first and
second , Kyle Russell put
down a sacrifice bunt al-
lowing Havens and Angle
to move forward before
Havens scored on a wild
pitch bfy Daly.
A second sacrificebunt
by Tony Thomas Jr.
paved the way for
another run from
Angle, putting
Cotuit ahead
by two.

James Darnell
smacked a neat double ,
breaking up Cisco'sperfect
game. Darnell came around
to score off of an RBI from
Brian Juhl, bringing the
score to 6-1.
In the eighth, Hyannis •
added another run before
Cisco departed and was
relieved by Cory Gearrin,
who finished the game.
Gearrin struck out the first
batter he faced but strug-
gled against bad calls and
hits from Matt Mangini
and David Macias.
By the end of the inning
the Mets had narrowed the
score to 6-4 but Gearrin
regained control, striking
out Juhl to seal the win.
"It's nice when yoti can
win, but they've got a great
club ," said Mets head
coach Greg King. "When
you look at their hitting
and pitching, they're doing
it to every team."
Kettleers head coach
Mike Roberts was pleased
to keep the cup in Cotuit.
"It'sgood. It'sreally good,"
he said.
After a special presen-
tation in Cotuit at the
Aug. 5 game by Rob Sen-
nott , publisher of The
Barnstable Patriot , the
cup will spend the off-
season in various Cotuit
locales while the teams
prepare for the 2007 cross-
town battle.

By Kathleen Szmit

In the wake of their win of
the Barnstable Patriot Cup,
the Cotuit Kettleers were
unprepared to suffer aloss at
the hands of the team at the
bottom of the proverbial to-
tem pole. On Monday, that's
exactly what happened when
the Bourne Braves took the
Kettleers 2-0.
Cotuit mustered just three
hits during the make-up
game in Bourne , unable to
render any offense against
the Braves.
The Kettleers fell behind
early in the game as Cotuit's
