Landing a whale
EDWARD F MARONEY PHOTO
ART ATTHE AIRPORT -Two works
by artist Jiirek unite at Barnstable
Municipal Airport Wednesday as his
painted sperm whale Great Spirit
welcomes Cape Air N69SC, which he
covered with images of humpback
whales. Stolen from the Hyannis village
green weeks ago, the restored Great
Spirit will be the centerpiece of the
International Fund for Animal Welfare's
Cape Cod WhaleFest there tomorrow
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Events on the
green include music, a learning tent,
and much more. For more on the Cape
Air plane, see page A:9.
Hoses that flooded
boats will be
removed nightly
By Paul Gauvin

Former city councilor Len
Gobeil was driving on a
Virginia highway when he
answered the cellphone on
Tuesday. He was asked how
hefared withhissailboatthat
was nearly sunk at the town-
owned Gateway Marina in
Hyannis over the weekend as
aresult of alleged "malicious
mlschief'.He said whoever
turned onthe dockside hoses
used for deck washdown and
left them running aboard his
and one other vessel early
Friday flooded the cabin and
ruined his electronic gear and
battery.
He, as other officials and
boat owners , agreed this
was a rare occurrence at the
marina along a boardwalk
and adjacent to wide-open
Aselton Park.
"My boat went bow first"
Gobeil said, a fact that at
least saved the outboard
motor from goingunder."I've
filed a claim with the insur-
ance company,"he said, "and
we'll take it from there."
Gobeil was on his way to
Greenville, S.C. Tuesday to
return his grandchildren to
their home and said we was
"going to turn around and
comeright back."
Last year,sitting councilor
Gary Brown'sboat sunkathis
slipin the marina. "We never
pinpointed why,"Brown said
Tuesday. "Maybe it was the
hose?" He has since acquired
another boat.
A spokesman from the
Harbormaster'soffice , which
manages town marinas, said
Wednesday personnel from
that office pumped out the
boats and will now take part
in assuring the two dockside
hoses are removed every
evening.
Evidently,the culprits also
tried to flood boatsthe night
before , according to Capt.
Danny Dyer of the kids'
fishing charter boat "Clam-
neck."
Dwyer usually arrives first
at the 20-slip marina at the
foot of the Walkway to the
Sea in Aselton Park.
He said when he arrived
Thursday morningthere was
arunning hose aboard askiff
owned by Housing Authority
Director Tom Lynch. "I shut
it off,"he said,and contacted
officials. "Hispump waskeep-
ing up with it," he said.
The next morning Dwyer
found Gobeil's boat going
under bow first and another
boat at the end of the dock
up to its gunwales.
Lynch has had a slip there
for 15 years and Gobeil two
years. Both believe this is a
random case of vandalism.
They are gratified the town
required slip lessees to carry
more insurance in the wake
of the Sea Genie tragedy six
years ago in which an Irish
summer worker died after
falling from a boat that used
a town-owned dock.
Lynch said there is talk of
placing surveillance cameras
along the waterfront.
Dwyer said he laments the
loss of the summer policemen
who patrolled the downtown
area and knew what was go-
ingon.Meanwhile,police said
they would increase patrols
by the area.
Former airport commis-
sioner Phil Doherty, who
also has a slip there, said
Wednesdayasimilarevent oc-
curred about three years ago.
He said that when Anchor
Outboard owned that area
it utilized a security fence,
an option that does not fit
the town's current desire for
an unfettered walkway along
the harbor.
Town attorney Robert
Smith also has one of the
slips there.
Ed Corr, a retired phone
company employee who has
had an end slip there for
"about 11 years," said his
boat was totaled from be-
ing flooded "right up to the
rails."He said Wednesdayan
insurance adjuster "totaled"
the boat, which, he said, is
now sitting in his back yard
in Hyannis.
"A few years ago some
people - tourists I guess
- got on board my boat to
eat their clams. They left all
their napkins and cardboard
boxes behind when they left.
Took alot of nerve, but that's
the only problem I've ever
had there."
He said he's looking for
another boat and hopes the
town will adjust his $2,600
slip fee next year for the
time he won't be using the
slip thisyear."I guess there's
supposed to be some sort of
security when you pay for a
slip," he said.
AN EVENING ON THE GREEN
DAVID STILL II PHOTOS
FOR THE YOUNG AND OLD -The gathering of
about 100 on the town green in Hyannis for
Wednesday evening's Barnstable Town Band
performance was a mix of young and old. This
week's show wrapped up with John Philip
Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever!" (right).
The band plays every Wednesday beginning at 7
p.m. on the green. On Aug. 9, the performance
starts an hour earlier to make room for the U.S.
Air Force Band, which will play after the town
band. The shows are free and open to all.
