POETRY. (F rom (he Boston Olive Branch.] ON THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN JDSIAII STCRGIS. " For though his bod y's under hatches , His soul ha.-, gone aloft. " Dibdin. Why from yon halliards hangs the flag So^j w and mournfu l there , Once fling ing from tho mizzen-peak Its radiance on the air '< Wh y with a mournful motion Swings the cutter to the tide , That once exulting met the wave , As the bridegroom meets his bride 1 ? Something is wanting there ! We miss the manly form Tha t once upon that deck defied The menace of the storm. The eye that throug h the darkness Scanned the pathway of the prow W hen the staunch keel furrowed the midni ght sea, Is closed and rayicss now. With wail of mournful music, With heat of muffled drum , Wi th shrouded flag and heavy step They bore him to hi s home— Hi s home—the last sad resting-place Of sterling faith and worth— The cold and ray less sepulchre Where lies his kindred earth. But look aloft ! his spirit Has mounted to the sky— There is a better home aloft , An anchorage on hi gh. There in a peaceful haven The faithful lie at rest ; W here no wild tempests nvenace wreck , Nor dark soa lifts its crest. Peace to the gallont dead ! IScst to the noble keart! Well on his native billow Did he enact his part. Cold is the hand his shipmates In gladness shook so oft , The hand that pledged a tearless faith— But then—his soul's aloft ! It is i\)e Jut)' of mothers to sustain the reverses of fortune. Frequent and sudden as they huve been in crir country, it is important that young females should possess some emp loyment , by which they might obtajn a livelihood ;n ease they are reduced to fhe necessity of supporting themselves. When families are unexpectedl y induced from affluence to poverty how pitifull y contemptible it is to see the moth er despondin g or hopeless , anil permittin g her ilaug hlers to embarrass those whom it is their (lut\ to assist and cheer ! ' * "f have lost my wholo fortun e," ;said i\ mercaant :ts he returned one evening to his home ; "we ca n no longer kuvp our carriage. Wtvmust leaye this house. The children can no longer-go tq expensive schools. Yesterday I was a rich uiaji ; to day there is nothing I can cull my own i" "Dear husband ,'' said the wife, "we :ir,e still rich in each other and our children. Money niay pass away, but God has given us a better treasure in those aetjve hands and loving hearts." "Dear father," said (he children , "do not look so sober. \Ve will biel p you to get a living. " "What can you do, pqor things V" said he. "You shall see !'' answered several voices. !'It is a pity if wo can have been to school for nothipg.-— How can flio father pf eight children be poor ? We shall wqrk and tnake you rich again. " "I shall help," said the younger girl hardl y four years old. "I will not have any new things boug ht , and I shall sell my great doll. I he heart of the husband and father, which had sunk lyifherin g into his bosom like a stone , was lift- ed up. The sweet enthusiasm qf tl je scene cheered him ,and his ni ghtl y prayer was like a song of praise. Th ey left their statel y house. The servants were dismissed. Pictures and plat e, rich carpets and fur- niture were sold , and she who had been the mistress of the mansion , shod no tears. "Pay oye ry debt ," said she ; lot nq pne suffer th roug h us, and we may be happy. " IIe< rented a neat cottage , and a small piece of ground , a few miles from the city. With the aid of Iii s sons, he cultivated vegetables fpr the market. He viewed wi th ejelight and astonishment the econ- omy of his wife, nurtured as she had been in wealth , and the efficiency which his daug hters soon acquired under her trainin g. The eldest one instructed the household , and also assisted the younger children—besides they execut- ed various works which they had learned as apeom- plishment , but which they found could be disposed of to advantage. They embroidered with taste some ofthu ocnament.il parts of female apparel , which wore readil y sold to a merchant in the city. They cultivated flowers , sent boquets to market in tin; carf that conveyed the vegetables ; they plaited straw ; they painted maps ; they executed plain needle work. Every one was at her post, busy and cheerfu l. The little cottage was like a bee hive. "I nev er enjoyed such health before ,' 1 said the fa- ther. "And I never wa,s , so, happy before ," said the nipther. '!\V« never knew how many things we could do, when we lived in the great house ,"said the children, "and we love each other a great deal better hpre.-r-r You call us your little , bees." "Yes," rep lied the father , "and you make just such honey as the heart likes to feed on. '' Economy as, well as industry, was strictl y observed: 'IQihin g w'is wasted, Nothing unnecessary was pur- chased. The eldest daug hter became assistant teach- er in a distinguished female seminary, and the sec- pnd took her place as instructress in the famil y. The dwelling, which had always been kept neat , they were soon able to beautif y, Its construction was improved ,and the, flowerin g trees were rep lant- ed around it. The merchant was happ ier under his woodbine cqvcrp d porch in a summer 's even.iug, than lie had been in his showy dressing-room. ,'We aie now thrivin g and prosperous ," said he , i'shall we. return to the city ?"' "O.h, no !" was the unanimousl y reply. "Let us remain ," said the wife , "where we have found health and contentment. Barnstable, May 14. To Owners, Masters and Builders of Slips. WE beg to call your attention to a new article for Shi p's fastening, which we believe to be greatl y superior to any material now used for that purpose— YELLOW METAL BOLTS. Although new in this market, they have been in ac- tive use in all the English Ship Yards and Docks for a long period of time. The manufacturers, whose agents we are, were in- duced to make a small quantity last Spring, by the de- sire of several shi p-builders here to obtain a sample of them for their own use. The builders who have tried them , are so entirel y satisfied with their character and worth , that the manufacturers have resolved upon mak- ing them in large quantities and offering them for sale. Being fi rmer than the Copper Bolts, they bear much harder driving ; and their composition prevents the formation of the verdi gris so much comp lained of as natnral to Copper. Their resistance to corrosion caus- es them to wear more uniforml y and longer than Cop- per Bolts, and they m ust have the preference over them. Thei r present price is about twenty per cent, less than Copper. We are now prepared to receive orders for all sizes and kinds used in shi p building, and can furnish an ar- ti cle as perfect as can be made.
