Freedom comeswith responsibility
RE: "Praying for Lawns" (July 7). I totally
agree with the sentiments expressed by Mr.
Maroney. I grew up in small town America
- West Concord , Mass. The thoughts I have
expressed in print and verbally at town council
sessions in Hyannis result from a desire to live
in a peaceful neighborhood such as I grew up
in 1942-1960. Living in America in 2006 should
mean freedom with responsibility. This trans-
lates into one and all obeying the laws of their
town, city or state, country. The Pilgrims were
immigrants as well as my mother's parents
from Sweden.
People movingto the United States ofAmerica
should expect to respect the rights of people al-
ready residinghere. They can expect to conform
to our basic manner of living, not vice versa. This
involves learningthe Englishlanguage amongst
other basics. How many of our relatives did this
in the past?
Just some thoughts from Hyannis Precinct 8
in the olde summertime.

End greyhounds' suffering
Over 150,000 Massachusetts voters signed
a petition demanding the end of greyhound
racing, only to have their voices ignored. An
increasingly informed public no longer wants
to support an industry that treats greyhounds
as if they are equipment , discards dogs who
don't "make the cut" like trash, and subjects
these gentle, sociable animals to a life of ser-
vitude and misery.
Greyhound racing is an industry fraught
with cruelty. In Massachusetts alone, nearly
500 greyhounds have been injured while racing
over the past three years. The most common
injuries are broken legs, fractures, and disloca-
tions. Other reported injuries include cardiac
arrest, spontaneous seizures, sudden collapse
before or after racing, spinal cord paralysis,
severed tails,lacerated eyes,apuncture wound,
and a broken neck.
The people of Massachusettshave made their
opposition to this cruel industry loud and clear.
Itistimefor their elected officialsto listen-and
ban this shameful "sport" once and for all.

Historical Society has some invaluable pictures
in your June 23, 2006, edition along with an ac-
curate description of the event by Jack.
Thank you for the Patriot' s constant coverage
and recording of the Cape'seventsand historical
facts. The Barnstable Patriot has always been

services and those of towns with
comparable populations,there was
more spadework to do to reach
agreement withinthe group before
talking to consultants.
Others disagreed,sayingthat the
consultants would help straighten
out that situation. In fact, the
discussion revealed that all five
districts use the same Cape Cod
auditorfor theiryear-end financials,
and Sullivanagreed to contact him
to seewhetherthosenumbers could
be merged to produce an overall
cost for services.
Committee member and coun-
cilorLeah Curtis, one ofthe driving
forces behind creation of the group
after hearing constituents ask
questions about the absence of a
townfiredepartment,stressed that
movingforward wasnot an advance
toward consolidation. Instead, she
said, it was another step toward
answering the question the com-
mittee agreed on previously:is the
town receiving said services in the
most efficient - and cost-efficient
-manner?
Members voted to allow public
comment at their meetings fol-
lowing completion of the agenda.
They agreed to follow the town
council's rules on that subject,
meaningspeakers willbe limitedto
three minutes each. Written com-
ments are welcomed by members
as well.
The committee willmeet at town
hall again Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.

The leadership of the 21s1
Century Task Force on the Cape Cod Commission - chair Elliott Carr and co-chairs Wendy Northcross and Tom Evans
-prepares to brief the county Assembly of Delegates Wednesday. Carr saidthe group will holdthree public hearings inAugust, all at 7 p.m., starting
with an Aug. 1 session at Mashpee High School and continuing Aug. 3 at Barnstable Town Hall and Aug. 8 at Eastham Town Hall. On Aug. 10 at 7

Assembly's chamber in the 1st District Courthouse in Barnstable village. The task force itself meets again July 27 at 7:45 p.m. in rooms 11 and 12
of Barnstable Superior Court House, when members of the Cape Cod Commission will share their views. A raft of recommendations on changes
for the commission is expected from the task force by the end of August or early September.
