Playpen totest themettleof localtalent By Kathleen Szmit kszmit@barnstablepatriot.com KATHLEEN SZMIT PHOTO INTHE PLAYPEN- Director John Waiters and son Jack practice their directing-acting skills in preparation for the Cotuit Center for the Arts Playpen:A 24-Hour Theater Experiment happening July 18-19. What doyougetwhenyou put together a host of playwrights, a handful of directors, and a slew of actors? You'll find out if you attend Play- pen: A 24-Hour TheaterExperiment at the Cotuit Center for the Arts this weekend. This singular event combines the writing prowess of six well- known playwrights - Gregory Hischak, BronwenProsser, Susan Lumenello, Daniel Fontneau, Candace Perry, and AnneAitken - with the directorial savvy of Carol McManus, ChristyMorris, PJ McKey, John Watters, Sue Lindholm, and Mary Arnault. Add in 24 actors and some inter- esting rules, and there is bound to be some spirited fun. The catch here is that not one of the participants, from playwrightsto thespians, knows what will be taking place. Begin- ning today, July 18, the group will meet for the first time, at which point the playwrights will begin writing short plays for the directors to direct and the actors to act in. The plays will then be performed at the playhouse July 19 beginning at 8 p.m. • RenownedWellfleetplaywright Candace Perry has taken part in similar events in Provincetown, and was thrilled to be invited to this first-of-its-kind event in Cotuit. "Ithinkthe most excitingthing is that it's theatre without the high drama," said Perry, writer of A Yellow Light and Meridian Summer. "There's kind of not time for problems." Perry did admit that asawriter, thetaskof penning a shortplayin lessthan24 hours based virtually on unknowns is a bit daunting. "As a writer it's a little scary," she said. "You think, 'Can I get this done?' And then something pushesthrough and youjust keep going. It just happens. It's like a group writing, except that you're not sitting there together." Perry said the event is rather mysterious. The only aspect known other than the number of people involved is that everyone is required to bring a prop. Along with whatever is brought, the crew will need to work with one common prop that will be used in each of the six short plays. "There'sone commonprop that wewillall haveto use,"Perry said, "But we don't know what that is, so we can't write ahead of time." Playwrights and directors also don't know with which actors they'll be working. "You just don't know what you're going to get until you get it," Perry said. "The only thing I can know ahead of time is the prop I'm bringing." When director John Watters learned of the event via Face- book, he was excited to toss his hat into the proverbial ring. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • t "I've been directing theater on the Cape for more than 40 years," said Watters, afree lancecolumnist andwriterfor TheBarnstablePatriot. Often ,he said, the taskof directing a majorproductioncan mean long hours away from family. Not so for this special event , in which Watters' son Jack will be one of the actors. Jack quipped that he was "voluntold" for the event. "Jack has done shows there," Watters said. "I've alwayswanted to do theater with him." Years ago Jack appeared ip a production of Waiting for Godot directed by his father, but they**" haven't collaborated since. Both agreed that even if they aren't paired for a play, they are looking forward to the event. "It's going to be weird being in a play that was only written in a night," said Jack. "It 's an interesting experience being part of a very unique show." "It iskind of anoveltysituation," said Watters. "I think everyone is flyingby theseat of theirpants. I'm looking forward to working with all tkese talented people." "I like what they're doing," said Perry. "I think it's really clever. It's challenging. It's really fun theatre." Playpen: A 24-Hour Theater Experi- ment culminates at 8 p.m. July 19 at 8 p.m. with a presentation of the six short plays.Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online at cotuitcenterfort- hearts.org or by calling 508-428-0669. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • a * AuniquetheatricaleventinCotuit CONTINUED FROM PAGE A&E:11 ?
