JL ^1ney Bruhl, and he
shouldknow.Wemeet Sid in Act
I of Ira Levin's ingenious thriller
Deathtrap -he's a formerly suc-
cessful playwright, but those
scintillating Broadway thrillers
are no longer clicking out fast
and furiously from Sid's Smith-
Corona typewriter. He's experi-
encing a nastywriter'sblock, and
as the curtain rises we're about
to see what Sid plans to do about
his dwindling career.
Sid has received a script from
novice playwright Clifford An-
derson, one of his students, and
he feels certain it has the quali-
ties of a sure-fire hit. Sid's wife,
Myra, thinks a collaboration
between the two writers might
work, and Sid begins to enlarge
on the idea in his mind's eye,
hatching a devious plan to make
the script his own.
To say that murder and may-
hem now ensue would be putting
it mildly. So get set, audience:
from here on, nothing will turn
out to be what it seems at first
glance. The characters shift into
high gear for this fast, clever
thriller, a specialty from the
late, great Levin, who during his
career turned out such favorites
asRosemary 'sBaby, The BoysFrom
Brazil and The Stepford Wives, as
well as the early classic novel
A Kiss BeforeDying, which later
became a movie starring Robert
Wagnerand Joanne Woodward,
Playing Sid, Abraham Adams
is a hoot, full of wry humor
and bombast. Adams effectively
uses his facial expressions and
body movements to draw out his
remarks, making his quick com-
ments allthe more resonant. Ste-
ven Mir'sopen countenanceplays
up the character of Clifford as a
naive and optimistic young man
who has yet to learn the tricks of
the trade, or so it seems. He, too,
fills up the stage with his physical
appearanceandlankymovements,
matching Sid's deviousness with
his own clever two-step.
As Myra , Kat Bramley is
especially effective when she
expresses her over-the-top ner-
vousness as the plot grows in
complexity. Alex Nicosia puts
on a good act as Porter Milgrim,
Sid's attorney, who has an idea
or two up his sleeve as well. And
as the psychic Helga ten Dorp,
Laura Esterman steals the show
fromthemoment of her entrance,
as she flits lightly about thestage,
describingher mentalpowers and
predicting dire happenings in the
Bruhl household.
That Deathtraphas held up well
over the years since 1978 seems
obviousfrom theaudiencescreams
that greeted each surprise twist
and suspenseful moment in the
performance,andthesewerenicely
punctuated in Act HIby ominous
rollsof thunderand lights-outmo-
ments. Nora Chester's direction
and the effectiveuse of the show's
many props helped make this an
extremely enjoyable evening.
