Ernst'sservings atCotuitarelight onthesugar ByJohannaCrosby arts@barnstablepatriot.com MICHAEL ERNST PHOTO FACINGUPTO LIFE-ChristineRathbun ErnstisbackatCotuitCenterfortheArtswithmorein-your-faceobservations and stories. Christine Rathbun Ernst never runs out of stories to tell, from the hysteri- call y funny to the shocking and touching. Inherlatest installmentplaying at Cotuit Center for the Arts, The Fat Ass CancerBitchOutside the Box and Occasionallyal Fresco, the Sandwichwriter/poetandspoken word performance artistsharesa slew of newtales and anecdotes. Most of her material is based on her experiences as the mother of two daughters ages 5 and 19, the wife of sculptor Michael Ernst, and as a breast cancer survivor. The feisty, opinionated Ernst doesn't mince words. She warns her audience from the start that she swears a lot and she's not kidding. Ernst's in-your-face, irreverent 70-minute monolog is peppered withprofanity morefor effect than shock value. "I will get sick again if I stop writing," said Ernst, who was in- spiredtoperformherself-revelatory showsafterherneighborcalledher a FACB.They've become friends sincebut the label stuckand she's gettinga lot of mileageout of it. Ernst'snewshow focuses alot onthetopicsof agingandmortal- ity, subjects that are on her mind nowthat she'sturning48andhas attended eight funerals this year. She's no longer buying into the value of physicalbeauty and has accepted the fact "that I'll never be skinny." Besides, she added: "I know only two really beauti- ful people and they are freaks." She'sintent on spendingthenext half-century of her life being a better human being than being a beautiful one. You might not agree with her politics or world-view (she's far to the left), but she's always entertaining, including her rants about a house down the street from the theater where the yard is filled with anti-Obama signs. Her home-front stories are among her best, including her hilarious description of trying to move a 100-year-old, three- legged baby grand piano in her living room and the night two cops came to her door because a neighbor mistakenly reported a domestic disturbance. Ernst told a disturbing story about the playground at her daughter's elementary school wheresomeonehad drawn swas- tikas and derogatory words, ex- posinghundredsof smallchildren to hate speech. She took pictures and sent them to the principal but nothing happened. "My daughter doesn't knc whataswastikais, but shekno defacingaplaygroundiswronj she said ruefully. Ernst poked fun at the o things people do with the c mainsof theirlovedones. "Ido wantto bereduced to a ghouli knickknack," she cracked. Her tone softened with a te ing story about encountering homeless man at the Salvati Army when she was shoppi for a dress for the show. Wh Ernst acknowledged him wit! friendly "hello," his face bro out into a smile that she liken to the sun coming out. "People don't talk no mort he told her. Shechallengedtheaudience move out of their comfort zo and talk to someone in the roo theydidn't know, and to leavet theater and become "engines compassion" in the world. Th was by far the best story of t night.
