There are books in life that
one can't wait to dive into,
and there are books that
one puts off for myriad reasons,
onlyto discover upongivingthem
achancethat theyaretrue hidden
gems. For this reviewer, Andrew
Cunningham's Wisdom Spring is
the latter.
When it fell across my desk
some months ago, I tucked it
in my bag, intending to read it
immediately. Then I noticed it
wasapolitical tale and, foolishly,
turned up my nose for a while.
Big mistake.
Cunningham's book tells the
story of Jessica Norton, a young
woman fleeing a tumultuous
situation involving a powerful
politician, and Jon Harper, a fa-
ther grieving the loss of his only
daughter, who is also attempting
toescapehisowncomplicatedlife.
When Harper picksNorton up
along a stretch of vacant Texas
highway, the two form a bond as
dynamic as it is surprising.
What ensues from the moment
of their seemingly chance meet-
ing is worthy of the best block-
buster film, but is made even
more exciting by Cunningham's
firm grasp onstorytellingthrough
powerful literature coupled with
an intimate knowledge of the
scenes in which the story is set,
as well as the potential for cor-
ruption in the intricate web of
US politics.
Cunningham is especially ad-
ept at keeping what could be
timeworn subject matter fresh
by infusing it with unexpected
twists along the way. Even the
fact that Norton possesses a
unique spiritual gift becomes
utterly believable and I daresay
will challenge the thinking of
eventhe most set-in-his/her-ways
person of logic.
Because of the masterful ways
in which Cunningham describes
the venues the duo travel on their
adrenaline-fueledjourney, I now
long to see the sights for myself,
though Cunningham's descrip-
tions paint vivid pictures.
Also to be appreciated is how
Cunningham honors his late
brother by creating him asa com-
manding character in the novel.
Be warned: this is no mere
beach reach. This is a book that
will have you turning pages into
the wee hours, longing for just
a little more. Let's hope there is
a sequel.
