ARTISTIC ENDEAVORS - Hope Cloud paints a picture of spring
hydrangeas during an afternoon at the Adult Supportive Day Program at
the Barnstable Senior Center.
Holding a horseshoe
steadily in one hand, Jim
O'Neill takes aim at the
post and makes his shot. It lands
wide, but still in the 25 points
region. O'Neill warmly receives
a round of applause before it's
time for the next opponent.
Welcome to another afternoon
in the Barnstable Senior Center's
Adult Supportive Day Program.
Now in its 16,h year overall and
its sixth at the Barnstable Senior
Center, the Adult Supportive Day
Program is a safe place for elder
adults to spend the day while
offering their caregivers a chance
to unwind.
The non-medical program
began in 1997 as an extension
of the Senior Center and was
originally housed in Centerville.
In 2008 the program relocated
to the Senior Center. While
the venue changed, the services
offered remained the same.
What the ASDP does offer is
somethingspecial. From morning
to afternoon , 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.,
attendees take part in all manner
of activities that not only help
them improve their physical
strength, but also enhance their
mental capabilities.
"Instead of just sitting around
the table chit-chatting, we offer
more hands-on activities," said
program coordinator Stacey
Cullen. "Wedo gardening, floral
arranging, games."
In truth , it's easier to tell
people what the group doesn't
do. Mornings begin1with a meet
and greet, followed by coffee
talk and trivia. Then the group
participates in Fit For Life by
doing gentle strengthening and
flexibilityexercises,or evenYoga,
before breaking into groups for
crosswordpuzzles, or otherbrain-
stimulating games. Frequently,
music from favorite performers,
such as Frank Sinatra and Judy
Garland, plays quietly in the
background.
After a home-cooked lunch,
prepared by ASDP staffers,
afternoon are filled with
games, arts and crafts projects,
