The Chatham Anglers hustled in and out of the cage, trying to beat the rain that threatened over Fenway Park. But they still got a few extra swings in. The last of all 10 Cape Cod Baseball League teams to take batting practice in the Cathedral of Baseball , the Ang lers welcomed the cloudy skies after a long, hot day of workouts and a chance to show their stuff to the many scouts in the stands. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. two teams at a time took the field . for drills on the Boston Red Sox home turf as part of a special annual tradition between the : CCBL and Fenway Park. The day started first with the 60-yard dash, followed by fielding drills, and ended with . every player's favorite, batting practice, with a chance to square off against the Green Monster. Some were returning for a second year, like Matt Gonzalez - of the Harwich Mariners, who hit the record eight home runs at the workout in 2013 , while some were stepping onto a major league field for the first time, like Falmouth Commodore Jake Madsen. Whether returnees or first- timers, their smiles were equally wide as they entered the park in right field , mouths agape, eyes wide, panning first up to the left and then full around right, resting finall y on the Green Monster, the ultimate goal. John Norwood of the Cotuit Kettleers started off the day strong as part of the second team to take BP, notching five homers. His record held fast all day until the final group of batters. Unfortunately, a five-run fifth inning by the Ang lers put those hopes to rest , as Chatham went on to win the Jul y 14 game 8-1 Wise 's home run came at the top of the fourth inning; a sweet solo shot that interrupted what was until that point a scoreless pitchers ' duel. Chatham , however, opted not to go down quietl y, taking advantage of pitching woes as Hyannis ' Marc Brakeman loaded the bases before walking in the tying run. Although Hyannis swapped out Brakeman for Ryan Perez , the Anglers continued their scoring onslaug ht when Kal Simmons , Bryant Burleson and Landon Cray all scored on a long double from AJ Murray, who then came horm on a single from Chris Shaw A homer from Nick Collin put the Anglers ahead 6-1 with the final two runs cominj in the eJghth to seal the deal The loss hit especial )' hard after Hyannis ' big 10- drubbin g of Wareham Jul y 13 Two huge innings , a five-rui sixth and a four-run seventh lifted the Harbor Hawk to vict ory, with a passei ball hel p ing the Hyanni get started , allowing Donnii Dewees Jr. to cross the plate Two batters later , an erro let Austin Slater and Carl Wis< score, with Sam Haggerty anc David Houser coming ii during the next at bat. E ver wonder what 's involved in maintaining a Cape Cod Baseball League team? Well, aside from scouting players, scheduling, daily practices and almost-daily games from June to August, there is money. Money covers everything from umpires and • coachesto playertransportation, bats, balls and uniforms, just to name a few. On July 19 , the Hyannis HarborHawks will hold its first , and hopefully annual , auction to helpraisemuch-needed funds to help support Hyannis' home team. According to Heather Arrascue, auction co-chair , the event was the brainchild of Mike Joyce, a Barnstable Village resident and supporter of the team. "He pulled in the people and I pulled in the items for the community,"Arrascuesaid. Joyce became involved when he became a host family for the team. "For threeorfouryearswe've been taking in kids as a host family for the Harbor Hawks," he said. At first he was reluctant , but said that he'snow happy he did. "It 's actually been a greal experience,"he said. "Each year I've been getting involved with the Harbor Hawksassociation." That has allowed Joyce tc see personally the needs of the Hyannis Athletic Association, which oversees the team. While new dugouts and field improvements are on the list of desires, a more immediate issue is bringing water intc the facility for the purpose of creating plumbing for the kitchen in order to fulfill a town requirement. Thetown is planning to install sewer pipes at the field , and the July 19 fundraiser will help raise funds to cover the HAA's portion of the cost. "We're not going to [add plumbing to the kitchen] until the town puts in the sewer," Joyce said , adding that next season is the anticipated goal. Joyce said that although he's not a fundraising person, since he's fairly well known in town he opted to lend his support tc CONTINUED ON PAG* B:4 Helping the Harbor Hawks Firebirds sneak past Kettleers 7-6 By Kathleen Szmit kszmit@barnstablepatriot.com KATHLEEN SZMIT PHOTO LOOKING BACK - Cotuit shortstop Jordan Ebert (15) looks toward first base where Jameson Fisher (7) tries to put a tag on a Hyannis foe during an earlier season game at Lowell Park. Rain washed out the Kettleers' July 16 game, two days after their 7-6 loss to Orleans. The Cotuit Kettleers clawed their way back from a 5-0 deficit against the Orleans Firebirds this week, but the Lower Cape hosts held on to trump Cotuit 7-6 in their July 14 game. After the Firebirds recorded a five-run second inning, the Kettleers did all they could to regain momentum, reaching the scoreboard at the top of the third when John Norwood came in on a wild pitch after reaching second on a double. Cotuit plated two more runs at the top of the fifth , with Drew Jackson leading off with a single to right before scoring on a double smacked by Jackson Glines.
