A. a place in which to live, work, buy, build and vacation and enjoy the free democratic way of life that i. our American Herit.ee. Firrt Comer. Had to Build Homes in Cape Wilderne.. now Maratona Mills. Farther south, Cotuit and Sa- tult or Siuiluit. The unaided eye oould hardly reach still rartlier Southwest to Massapee, die modern mash pee. In His nearer foreground was Skonouct, hearing later tho euphonious name of Skunknet from tho river of that name. NurtheuBt from Shoot Plying Hill was Muttakeeset , partl y In the present village ot Barnstable and partly in Yarmouth. The original Cmmaflquc covered the Eastern part ot Sandy Neck and tlie region around Barnstable Harbor. This be- longed to lyanough, who during seasons of the year lived Oh Sandy Neck and was sometimes culled tho Suekem of Ciimmaqtild. Those early explorers tnuat have seen also, from I trelr lofty peak , tho Indian Canton of Skuuton , which ! ^eluded Scorton Neck und Bcorton 11 111. Along the great marshes, extending westward from Barnstable Harbor to Scorton , was Mooso- tuokeqult, the aboriginal name of West Uurnstable, meaning very appropriately "Tho Groat Meadows." Over all this wide area which met the gaze of those explorers , and covering tit least one hundred Bquare miles of almost primeval wilderness, roamed these trlbea or famiiios of comparatively peaceful Hedmon. Here they pursued their simple occupations of html lug and flatting, and to a limited extent, lu a primitive way, cultivated the soil. Here, also , roamed by day herds of door , not entirely extinct at the present time , and nt night paoka of wolves, happily no longer included among our forest denizens, No Roads at First In all Uils vast wilderness domain, ihove was not u white man's home , not n road over which men travelled , not u sound or nlgu of any descrip- tion giving token of tho Oncoming title of civiliza- tion HOOU to break on those lonely shores, an ever increasing tide; which , after a lapse of nearly throe Hundred years, has made this Hoctlon one of tho fatuoiiH summer resorts of tint country, Nor WIIH the Bilonco and loneliness which brood- turned Beaward either North or South . On Vlno- ed over tho land IOHB marked when the gaze was year Sound , which 1\UH since become, « grout history of couatwtBe and ocean travel , no mill of vessel or smoke of steamer mot the V IHIOII . Cape Cod Hay, now at limes dotted with the while HII II K of Hulling fleets , or at other times, Us in some recent years, bearing squadrons of mighty war vessels, WIIH wllh- . out a sign of life , except perhaps, some military canoe pushing out from Handy Neck, Lot us very briefly sketch the Initial stops which j led to the settling of Ihe throe oldest towns upon ' Capo Cod. A very remarkable activity in Now Kng- j land colonization followed the return of the May- flower to Knglnii d in tho Spring of , 11121. Camp In Single Ship Ilartlott of London, In Ills book, "The pilgrim pathoi'8", says, "A single Bhlp curried over the Pil- grims and their fortunes ,—it fleet now departed with tho emigrants thai followed In their wake." Notable among the HhlpH crowded with KugllHh emigrants were the "Fortune", which urrlvud at Plymouth lu November, 1021, with thirty-live new members; the "Abigail" , having on board Joh n Kndlcotl , the llrst Governor of the Massachusetts Colony, with about fifty others, who founded In Hi2K Nuumokii g, the modern Salem; and the "Arabella ," the ship of John Wlnthrop and his company, which arrived In Boston harbor by way of Salem, July 1st , 16801 It is but to repeat a truism to say that New England was born in old England. The rots ofl these old colony towns,-and especially is it true of Harnstaule,—strike far und deep Into English soil. J he very names of there towns are strongly sug- gestive of their English origin. Plymouth, Sandwich, Barnstable, Falmouth , Yarmouth , Chatham , Harwich and Truro bear the names of English seaboard towns, most of them centuries old when the "May- flower " . that stormy petrel of the Atlantic , sought the safe shelter of Provlncetown Harbor in Novem- ber, 1900. The habits , customs and traditions of the people here In West Barnstable are strongly English even to thiB day, not withstanding a generous admixture of alien races, sucli as Italians, Portugese, Swedes, Huns and Irish. And this in spite of the fact that for more than a century the Stars and Stripes have floeted over us instead of the blood-red banner of St. George It Is not an easy tusk In this early part ot t):e twentieth century, with its stirring life and mo/e- meut, to RO buck nearly three nuMved yeavs And think in terms of the seventeenth century—to have an adequate and satisfactory mental picture of life as existed here on Cape Cod loss than a century an da half after the discovery of America and only two decades after the landing of tho Pilgrims on Plymouth Hock. First Settlers Investigated It seems probable that the English settlers in Scituate, who in process of time for various rea- sons, decided to establish their permanent homes on Cape Cod , did not uccept , unchallenged , hearsay Information relative to their place of settlement. We may reasonably suppose that they sent some of their own number to reconnolter the region to which they purposed to move, these to report on their return as to Its advantages or disadvantages as a permanent abiding place. Imagine , if you can , two of theBe men , who like Caleb und Joshua of old ,, were sent to Bpy out the land , climbing to the top of sonic tall oak or pine on Shoot Flying Hill , and looking in every direction on the scene of wilderness loneliness spread out before them . How different iVu landscape which met the gaze of these pilgrim explorers from that which may now been seen from any hilltop In the center of the town. Then, great tracts of practically unbroken forests stretched wld? in every direction. Where now a score of peaceful villages are Been , with their white church spires p'olntlng heavenward , thon the forestB were broken only by groups of Indian wigwams or huts on vthfi shores of Nine Mile pond, or other ponds, or along the margins of the Htreams. Now large tracts of level farm land , Borne hundreds of acres In extent , take the place of small clearings carved out of the forest by tho Indians or planted wifft rude stone Instruments with maize or Indian own. Hyannis—lyanough' s Town On the south side of the Cape, bordering the Sound , waH lyanOugh' H tract , the present Hyannis. This tract also included the Must part of Barnstable, a part of West Barnstable, the EaBt part of Sandy, Neck, and South and WoHt Yarmouth. West of ly- anough's Sachemdom was Cheekwuqiiet , now Cen- terville , and beyond that Cotocheeset, the present Ostervillo.
