POETR Y. Ihe Old Maid' s Lament. I see Mm walking in the street , I see him at the ball , And still in every crowd we meet , He's gayest of them a!i. He looks fit me, mid with a smile- Bows gracefully and low; I wonder if he sighs the while , To think I told him ''No V There arc no wrinkles in his face, No silver in his hair, But in my own , alas, I trace The ravages of care ; Oh, ho must very heartless he, To keep his heauty so. He doesn 't seem to fret like me, Because I told him "No ]" He's fifty-two anil flirting yot, With every childish face, And seems completely to forget , My own matured grace. I do believe he's handsomer, Than he was long ago, I wish he'd only ask me now, I wouldn 't tell him "No !"' AHho' I'm onl y forty-eight, I've lost my teeth and hair , Indeed I can't afford to wait , While he is fooling there ; It isn 't righ t, hut yet I must , My feelings lot him know , How much I love him , and I trust He will not answer "No ! " 'Tis done—I met him yesterday, And popped the question plain , Ami ferventl y I hope I may, Ne'er do the like again, ' He answered with a horrid grin , '¦I'm mar ried long ago, And even if I hadn't been , Old maid , I'd tell you 'No !' " LADIES' DEPARTMENT. JTIcn and women , A woman is naturally gratified when a man sin- gles her out , and addresses bis conversation to her. She takes pains to appear to the best advantage ,but without any thought of willfull y misleading. , How different is it with men ! At least it is thus that women in general think of men . The mask with them is deliberatel y put on and worn us it mask , and wo betide the sill y girl who is too weak or too unsuspicious, not to appear disp leased will) the well- turned compliments and Halterin g attentions so lav ishl y bestowed upon her by her partner at the ball, If a girl has brot hers, she sees a little behind t he scenes, and is saved much mortification and dis- appointment. She discovers how little men mean by attentions the y so freely bestow upon the last new face which takes their fancy. Men are singularl y wanting in good feeling upon this subject ; they pay a girl marked attention , flat- ter her in every way , and then , perhaps , when war- ned by some judicious friend lhal they are going too far, "can hardl y believe the girl could be so foolish as to funcv that anything was meant. " The fault which strikes women most forcibly in men is selfishness. They expect too much in every way, and become impatient if t heir com forts and peculiarities are interfered with. If the men of the present id until men are suf- ficientl y improved to be able to appreciate higher qualities in women ,and to choose their wives among women who possess such qualities , I do not expect that tho present desirable movement will make much progress. The improvement of both sexes must be simultaneous. A "gentleman 's horror " is still a "blue stocking," which unp leasing ep ithet is inva- riably bestowed upon all women who have read much, and who arc able to think and act for them- selves. A Young Wife. Music has a wonderfull y soothing influence ; pur- er than painting, more ethereal than poetry.and the least sensorious of any, it exercises the greatest pow- er over the human mind. Are you, young men, worn out with the toils of the day, and anxio us tc drown the linger ing echoes of the roar of wheels and machinery of mammon ? Learn to play the violin Amusement or relaxation you must have ; try this , it will exert on you all the power and none of the poison , of opium. If you feel dul l, sleepy, and ex- hausted , a livel y tune on the violin will rouse your nerves, and restore them to harmony. Don't have recourse to wine or alcohol ; these will aggravate , not cure ; try music; it is essentiall y teetotal , and yet ins piring . We all know the effect produced on t he 42(1 Hi ghlanders at Waterloo , when beginniim to waver , by the sound of t he pipes. Is the mind haunted with evil thoug hts ? ¦As Christian young men , yon know tho soverei gn and infallible pro- scription , but" in its place music has a wonder full y expressive power. David played before Saul and the evil spirit forsook him. Luther , in desponden- cy used to seize his flute , and rev ive his spirits , re- mark ing, "The devil hates good music." Are you marr ied V—docs your wife lose her temper ?—and she would be an angu l if she never did—let her take the piano , and you your vio lin , and tr y some fi ne old melod y—-"John Anderson my Joe ," if you can think of no other .
