Of the more than GO patron sub- scribers who on that July night of 1927 witnessed the modest begin- ning of what has become Cape Playhouse fame , there were HOV - I eral who attended last Monday night the opening of the 23rd sou- son , as special gUOHls of Richard Aldrlch. Between the acts they gathered outside und met liasll Kuthbono , who slurred on both nights , In both performances, and ! who never came to Dennis In the ' years between. Little did tbey realize , audience or actors, on that first night all those yours ago, that they were participating in the opening of America's most famous summer theatre, Perhaps Raymond Moore dreamed of It , because li was from his mind Ihe idea sprang, lie had I deep and positive belief In his dream and many Cape Playhouse goers of those early years , If they were present .Monday night IIIH I, must, have thought of Raymond Moore and wished he might know of tho extraordinary arid ample success that has stemmed from his efforts . In 11127 II was a pleasant enough Idea to visit the crude , little play- house, but not particularly signifi- cant, It was fun and something now to do on Cape Cod of a summer evening. And surely no one could forgot those hard »eats and on the second visit curried a cushion from home to sit on , also a flashli ght by which to read one's program. It gave one a delightfully romantic, feeling to attend a play In the little theatre that was once a church and then again a garage. Much has transpired ln the In- tervening years. There is now the Cape Cinema , the Restaurant, and the lovely grounds and gardens. It is all a dream coming true. Those who were mentioned as present Monday night for the "re- union" were Mrs. Walter D. Bak- er, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Me- gatblin, and Mr. Prank Thacher of Hyannis; Dr. and Mrs. Giles Dowllng, Mrs. Walter T. Wright, and Miss Emma Holbrook of Hy- annlsport; Mrs. W. R. Quinn of Centerville; Mrs. Haviland Piatt of Oyster Harbors; Mrs. Qulncy . A. Shaw of Eastham. For the opening week of the 1949 season, a very happy choice of play was made, "The Heiress", by Ruth and Augustus GoeU, which was suggested by Henry James' novel, "Washington Square." Basil Rnthbone , who has played the part of Dr. Austin Sloper many times, gave a perfect performance of the dignified and proud parent. Accustomed as he was ln his household to have his every wish obeyed as if il were n command , he unwitting ly roused his seeming- ly quiescent daughter to the furv 0 a suppressed woman can finally s express. Gwen Anderson , as Cuth- y erine Sloper, the daughter , guve a more than good portrayal of tho j Part. 3 1 The aunts , Marie Carroll as La- . vanla Pennimnn und Dorothy t Bluckburn as Elisabeth Almond , i ' performed excellently their parts ¦ or nuntB to Catherine. Mario Car- | roll, particularly, euused much .|merriment on the stage much of J the time and wus garrulous and 1 lltittering to the end. "Don't let her - Into my room ", said the doctor , • I when he took to his bed , ill , "unless 1 I'm In a coma." Dean Norton supported lather J mid daughter well In his part us Morris Townsend, the penniless, i fortune-hunting dandy, who looked i j about the Sloper home, when lid i thought he'd won the girl , and breathed a vocal sigh or relief saying, "I'm home, I'm home", with an air of possessive pleasure. Dortba Duckworth as Morris ' sister, Mrs. Montgomery, Scott 1 Merrill us Arthuli Townsend, his ! cousin, Julann Geffrey us Marian I Almond , Catherine 's cousin , and j Olive Dunbar as Marlu. tho maid In the Sloper household, all fitted perfectly Into the dramatic en- semble.
