A gem of a Beast plays in Orleans Energetic , enthusiastic performances carry the day By Melora B North arts@barnstablepatnot.com When your mother said to you , "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder."we hope you were listening because it's true, at least when it comes to Beauty and the Beast, now playing at the Academy of Performing Arts. The familiar tale of the en- chanted prince transformed into a beast, and the young beauty who transforms him yet again, gets an enthusiastic and energetic performance nn the Orleans stage. As the Beast. Todd Yates Gosselin ex- presses righteous anger at his predicament , which does little to endear him to beautiful Belle (Rebecca Banas). Banas brings a sweet naivete to her role, and, as his hard shell melts before her warmth, Gosselin brings hope to those who have loved and never been loved. With a formidable Mrs. Potts (Lauren Piselli), a tea pot in fact , and her son. Chip (Cody Beltis), a. you guessed it, chipped tea cup, heading up the household , the show moves along as we encounter walking, talk- ing and singing spoons and knives, a talking clock named Cogsworth (Peter Milsky ) and Luimiere, the chandelier (Kevin Quill). The audience was enchanted not only by the storyline and musical numbers the night we were there, but the costumes de - signed by Pam Banas. They enjoyed the very spirited band and pianist Christopher Morris, who could not wipe a smile of delight off his face during the entire performance. Kudos should be given to chore- ographer Suzette Hutchinson and Peter Earle, who also directed and did lightingand set design. Imagina- tive isju st one word of praise for this clever remake of Disney's hit. Audience members filed out sing- ing and smiling. What more can you ask of a performance?
