Making the
connection
C
ommunity Connections celebrated 20 years of
dedication and service to people with disabilities
at "An Evening of Celebration " on June 9 at its
center on Whites Path in South Yarmouth.
More than 130 people attended and over $15,000 was
raised through silent and live auctions. Attendees en-
joyed the music of the Pat Caderio Jazz duo and feasted
on food from local restaurants. Proceeds from the auc-
tion will help Community Connections continue to pro-
vide many needed services to people with disabilities.

Libraries, mostly private , have
been in existence since at least
3000 B.C.. preserving the chroni-
cles of the human endeavor, but
the public library movement in
the United States didn't begin
until the last half of the 19th
Century.
School libraries can be traced
to that era also, when the prox-
imity to a public library was a
consideration when building
new schools. The school libraries
evolved as public libraries began
temporaril y placing some book
collections in schools.
It also started the era of the
bookmobiles , some of which
are still in use today in rural
areas. Were it not for libraries ,
how else, as poet John Greenleaf
Whittier put it, could the young
learn:
Where Greek and Roman f ind
themselves
Alive along these crowded
shelves:
And Shakespeare treads again
his stage.
And Chaucer paints anew his
age.
