Arthur A. Brennan, 83
Cotuit - Arthur A. Brennan, 83,
died June 12,2006,at Cape Regency
Rehabilitation &Nursing Center in
Centerville.
He was the husband of the late
Marguerite (Ryan) Brennan.
Mr. Brennan was born in Boston
and graduated from Boston Latin
High School and Boston College.
He played baseball throughout
school and continued to be active
inthe sport,involved withthe Cape
Cod Baseball League and Cotuit
Kettleers.
He was an airline executive for
many years and retired from the
Airline Pilots Association in 1987.
Survivors include three daugh-
ters,Mary A.Kozowyk of Braintree,
Barbara B. Dooley of Centerville
and Nancy A. Brennan of Avon,
Conn.; and a granddaughter.
A funeralMasswascelebrated at
Christ the KingChapel inMashpee.
Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery
in Cotuit.

Florence R. Kettner, 101
Hyannis - Florence R. (Henrich)
Kettner, 101, died May 31, 2006, at
Mayflower Place Skilled Nursing
& Rehabilitation Center in West
Yarmouth.
She was the wife of the late Wil-
liam "Bill" Kettner.
Mrs. Kettner was born in New
York City and moved to New Ro-
chelle, N.Y., as a teenager.
She and her husband raised a
familyinScarsdale,N.Y,and moved
to Craigville in 1949.
Survivors include three daugh-
ters, Bettie Brophy of West Hy-
annisport, Virginia Robichaud of
West Yarmouth and Joan Watson
of Brookhaven, N.Y; 10 grandchil-
dren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two
granddaughters,Karen Brophy and
Nancy Brophy Brooks.

John O. Mellin Jr., 56
Orleans -John Otto MellinJr.,56,
an Orleansresident since 1971, died
June 9, 2006, at his home.
He was the husband of Diana
"Dinah"Romig.They were married
in 1981.
Mr. Mellin was born in New York
City. He graduated from Warren
Wilson College in North Carolina.
Startingin 1955,he summered in
Orleansand waslater an apprentice
to a local builder. He started his
own business, Mellin Associates
Builders, in 1978.
He loved life by the sea and
enjoyed entertaining family and
friends at both his home and a
house he built for his family on
Nantucket. A gentle and generous
man, he valued a simple life.
In addition to his wife, survivors
include a son, John StantonMellin;
his mother, Gloria of Orleans; and
twobrothers,TimofLexington,Ky.,
and James of Wilton, Conn.
A memorial service will be at
11 a.m. June 24 at The Federated
Church of Orleans, 162 Main St.,
followed by areception at 163Brick
Hill Road in Orleans.

Robert L. Nichols, 81
Yarmouthport - Robert L. Nich-
ols, 81, died June 12, 2006, at his
home of an illness associated with
pancreatic cancer.
He was the husband of Virginia
Straghan Nichols , who died in
1989.
Mr.NicholswasborninMilwaukee.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he
served on minesweepersinthe west-
ern Pacific, including the waters off
China, and participated inthe Battle
of Leyte Gulf off the Philippines.
After thewar,he earned amaster's
from the Fletcher School of Interna-
tional Law and Diplomacy at Tufts
University.Hejoined theForeignSer-
vice of the U.S. Information Agency
in 1951 and was initially assigned
to the Philippines. He later served
in Italy and the Netherlands. After
completing Chinese language train-
ing in Taiwan in 1961, he served as
a cultural officer in Hong Kong and
Taiwanand as apublic affairs officer
in Singapore.
In the early 1970s, he directed
the State Department's cultural
exchange program with China and
was a member of a delegation there
headed by then-Secretary of State
Cyrus Vance.He later served as the
USIA'sdeputy director for East Asia,
becominginvolved inthe normaliza-
tion ofrelationsprocess and working
to establish USIA offices in China.
At the time of hisretirement,he was
director for the Voice of America in
Asia.
After retiring to Cape Cod in 1979,
he continued hisinterest in China as
ateacher and awriter.Heled delega-
tions and studytours to Chinafor the
National Committee on U.S.-China
Relations, ChinaEducational Travel
(sponsored by Cape Cod Commu-
nity College) and the Smithsonian
Institution. He delivered his final
communitycollege lecture on China
last month.
Active in community theater, he
had rolesinmanyplaysand musicals
at the Barnstable Comedy Club and
the Academy of Performing Arts in
Orleans. One of his favorite roles
was in a production of Pinocchio
withhisgranddaughter McCourtney
Crockan.Healsoenjoyed fishingwith
his grandsons.
He helped form JAM Specialists
Inc., which publishes the Cape Cod
Disability Access Directory and
provides services to persons with
disabilities.
Survivors include two children,
Nancy Crockan of Centerville and
Peter Nichols of Perth,Australia;six
grandchildren;and two great-grand-
children.Hewasthe father ofRobert
Nichols, who died in 2003.
A memorialservice willbe held at
11am.todayat St.David'sEpiscopal
Church, 205 Old Main St. in South
Yarmouth.

Walter C. Ochs, 86
Centerville - Walter C. Ochs, 86,
died June 10, 2006, at Cape Cod
Hospital in Hyannis after a long
illness.
He was the husband of Avis E.
(Bacon) Ochs for 40 years.
Mr. Ochs was born in Milton,
where he lived for many years.
He attended Bentley College and
worked for Boston Gear Works in
North Quincy for 35 years.
In 1965 he moved to Centerville.
He was a former commodore of
Wequaquet Lake Yacht Club and
a former member of the Masonic
lodge in Randolph.
Besides hiswife,survivorsinclude
a stepdaughter, Lynne G. Turner;
and a grandson.

Paul J. Ryder, 83
Osterville -Paul J.Ryder,83,died
June 14, 2006, of heart disease.
He was the husband of Louise
(Mclnerney) Ryder for 56 years.
Mr. Ryder was born in FallRiver.
He was a graduate of Boston Latin
School and Boston College and
earned a master's in business ad-
ministration from the University of
Pennsylvania.
He enlistedintheArmyAirForces
in 1943and served as acommunica-
tions officer during World War II.
He taught economics at Boston
Collegefrom 1949-50andthenjoined
Ford Motor Co. from 1950 to 1986.
At Ford he was a member of the
Ford-UAW negotiations team from
1956untilhisretirement. He earned
a J.D. degree from the University of
Detroit and was a member of the
Michigan Bar.He served as a direc-
tor of the national and Michigan
BlueCrossBlue ShieldAssociations,
was president of the council of Em-
ployee Benefits and was elected to
the city council of Lathrup Village,
Mich., for two terms.
He enjoyed reading, especially
historyand biographies,and was an
avid golfer and member of the Oys-
ter Harbor Club. He was amember
of Our Lady of Assumption Church
in Osterville.
Besides his wife, survivors in-
clude two daughters, Mary Louise
Larkin of Danbury, Conn., and
Judith Anne Moran of New York
City;five sons,PaulJr.,John,James
and Christopher, all of the Detroit
area, and Kevin of Honolulu; eight
grandchildren; and four nieces and
a nephew.
A funeral Mass was celebrated
in Our Lady of Assumption Church
in Osterville.

Josephine Scaramuzzo, 80
Centerville - Josephine Scar-
amuzzo, 80, died May 22, 2006, at
Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
She was born in Boston.

niece.

Joan Miles Troup, 84
Centerville -JoanMiles (Brigham)
Troup,84,formerlyofYarmouthport,
died June 11, 2006.
She was the wife of the late
Robert Troup. They were married
in 1951.
Mrs. Troup was born in St. John-
sbury,Vt., and moved to the Cape
in 1927. She was a 1940 graduate
of YarmouthHigh School and later
moved off Cape.
She was a machine operator for
Keystone Manufacturing for 10
years and for Proctor & Gamble
for 31 years.
In 1986 , she returned to
Yarmouthport,where shebecame a
member of Dennis Union Church.
She enjoyed golf and was amem-
ber of Kings Way Golf Course.
Survivors include a brother,
Cortes Otho Brigham of Golds-
boro, N.C.; four nieces; and two
nephews.
Afuneral service washeld at Den-
nis Union Church. Burial followed
in Dennis Village Cemetery.

John E. Upham Jr., 90
Centerville - John E. Upham Jr.,
90, died June 11, 2006, after a long
illness.
He was the husband of Virginia
Backus Upham and the late Mar-
garet Garron Upham.
Mr.Upham was born in Waltham
and raised in Waban.
He was an avid golfer, sailor and
bridge player. He skied mountains
across the United States and Eu-
rope. He was active in church and
enjoyed spending time with his
family and pets.
Besides hiswife,survivorsinclude
adaughter,ChristineUpham Trom-
bly;two stepdaughters,CarylStew-
ard and Linda Hogan; two grand-
children; four stepgrandchildren;
and two great-granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held
at 11 a.m. June 24 at St. Mary's
Episcopal Church on Route 6A in
Barnstable. Burial is in St. Mary's
Church Garden.

Marstons Mills - Priscilla C.
(Mclntire) Vaughan, 84, of Halifax
and North Eastham, died June 12,
2006, at her daughter's home after
a short illness.

J. Vaughan.
Mrs. Vaughan was born, raised
and educated in Weymouth and
lived inNorth Easthambefore mov-
ing to Halifax 10 years ago.
During World War II, she was a
secretary for Bethlehem Steel at
the former Fore River Shipyard in
Quincy. Later, she was head of the
lingerie department for the former
Bargain Center in Quincy.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting,
quilting and traveling.
Survivors include two sons, Dan-
ielJ.Viughan Jr.,of Norwell and Mi-
chael Vaughanof North Weymouth;
five daughters, Priscilla Reams
of Titusville, Fla., Marsha Purtle
of Marstons Mills, Susan Riley of
Manchester,N.H.,CynthiaMartin of
Halifax and Linda Keenan of North
Weymouth; two sisters, Elizabeth
Gardner and Virginia Smith, both
of Eastham; 24 grandchildren; and
13 great-grandchildren.

Congregational Church in Halifax.
Burial willbe at a later date in Ev-
ergreen Cemetery in Eastham.
