FRIENDS AT WORK - Friends of the Osterville Library volunteers June Barr (left) and Margaret Magowar
staff a Wednesday morning book sale in the library's basement.
What is most appropri-
ate for a library fundrais-
er, a "silent" auction or a
platoon of wailing bagpip-
ers?
Ostervillians and visi-
tors have the opportunity
to find out later today as
the Osterville Library fea-
tures some of both, a si-
lent auction at 7 p.m. and
a bagpipe concert from
5:15 to 6:45 p.m., both at
the tent on the library 's
expansive lawn.
These events are only
two of a weekend of ac-
tivities sponsored by the
library and its friends.
There will also be a paper-
making workshop from 10
a.m. to noon tomorrow,
(Sat. June 24) and a free
concert by Dan Clark , the
popular "Singing State
Trooper " and his wife ,
Mary, at 7 p.m., all under
the tent.
The weekend events
peak with a clambake ,
complete with lobster,
corn-complimentary
beer and wine and "Steel
Drum" entertainment by
Vernon Parris at 5:15 p.m.
Sunday, also under the
tent.
It is said that everything
in the world exists to end
up in a book , and , we
might add , every book ex-
ists to end up in a library
- and every library harbor-
ing mankind's earthly and
spiritual experiences - ex-
ists by steady infusions of
cash with which to cloak
its fragile reports from
withering with time.
That's partly why volun-
teers and library person-
nel work to make these
events a success - to
raise funds with which to
improve physical capacity
and ensure the continua-
tion of a village repository
sheltering the foundations
of hard fact and fanciful
fiction.
Barbara Hansen , who
was volunteering with
the Friends of the Library
book sale on a recent
rainy Wednesday morning,
noted the rainwater leaks
soiling the carpet in the
basement.
"It's strange ," she said.
"You can walk by this
building and think noth-
ing's wrong with it. But
that's not the case , which
is why we are trying to get
a new library. "
Tonight's auction begins
with a preview party at
5:15 to 6:45 with compli-
mentary hors d' oeuvres
and cash bar, during
which the Highland Light
Scottish Pipe Band will
perform , followed by the
auction at 7 called by auc-
tioneer Keith Klinger.
Library director Pa-
tricia Rogers , working
with "Summer Celebra-
tion 2006" chairman Gail
Nightingale , supported
by Ann Crosby and Anne
Ehart , said earlier some
of the items among many
others to be auctioned
include Red Sox tickets ,
a hand-knitted afghan by
Barbara Hansen , and a
large print from a book by
Canadian author/photog-
rapher Robert Bateman ,
titled Artie Landscape. " A
copy of the book , "Natural
Worlds " is included.
The celebratio n con-
tinues at 2 p.m. Monday
with a tea and fashion
show, with accessories for
children , adults "and even
dogs ," items provided by
many of the Osterville
shops.
On Tuesday, the cel-
ebration continues with
Allegretto , musicians and
a variety of instruments
including bagpipes , fiddle ,
