POLITICAL POTPOURRI"
Legislature passes
stimulus package
The economic stimulusand
supplemental spending pack-
age passed by the state House
and Senatelast week contains
$75,000 for improvements to
McKeon Field, home of the
HyannisMets of the CapeCod
Baseball League.
State Sen. Rob O'Leary an-
nounced the news in a release
that also noted approval of
$50,000 to keep the Hyannis
and Fall River boat registry
and-titling offices open.
Two historic Cape institu-
tions will benefit from the
package. There's$200,000 for
renovations to the Wampa-
noag Indian Meeting House
in Mashpee and $1 million to
the Massachusetts National
Guard for training and op-
erations at, and planningthe
future of, the Massachusetts
Military Reservation on the
Upper Cape.
"Thanks to a combined ef-
fort by the entire delegation,
we were able to secure these
important appropriations for
the region,"O'Leary stated in
the release.
Another million for
MMR
While the Massachusetts
House and Senate were ap-
provinga$1millionappropria-
tion for the Massachusetts
Military Reservation,the U.S.
House was doing the same
thing.
U.S. Rep. Bill Delahunt an-
nounced that the House has
OK'd $1 million for design
work on the proposed Home-
land Security TrainingCenter
at the Upper Cape base. The
Center has been among the
Congressman's priorities for
four years.
"Whilewe may have wonthe
battle to keep Otis (Air Force
Base), our work to save the
installation is far from over,"
Delahunt stated in a press
release. "We will keep work-
ing to obtain new Air Guard
missions, while promoting
a long-term agreement for
Coast Guard operations and
the establishment of a new
Homeland Security Center."
Perry pleased by
junior operators
changes
Tougher penalties for driv-
ers with Junior Operator Li-
censesordriver'spermitswho
speed orviolatepassenger and
time restrictions were passed
nearly unanimously by the
House, state Rep. Jeff Perry
announced this week.
In a press release, Perry, a
co-sponsor of the legislation,
stated that the changes "will
help ensure that our young
drivers will possess the much
needed experience before ven-
turing out onto our roads."
Let elders make the
choice
State Rep. Eric Turking-
ton of Falmouth is urging
the Speaker of the House to
back legislation that would
let elders and the disabled
choose the setting for their
long-term care.
In a press release, Turking-
ton stated that "...we have to
make it possible for them to
stay in their homes as long
as possible." The represen-
tative noted an administra-
tion study showing that the
change would save the state
$134 million in the first five
years by reducing nursing
home stays.
