¦MACKf-REI"—The Yarmouth Herald reports a
T sat catch of mackerel to the westward ;—accounts
>'«,„the eastward are equall y satisfactory.—[Hali-
fax Sun , 12th.
Tub Knto°king Girls —The editor of the New
York Sunday Times has been to see the .Rochester
Knock ings."
^e remarks :
The knocking is extraordinary. We cannot
rtiioss how it is produced ; but that it is mechanical
" have no more dnubt than that the pen in our
)' (! is a solid substance. Aside from I he physica l
- possib ility of an immaterial being striking solid
!1 w« liftin'ff tables and the like , we are perf ectl y
vinccil from our own personal observation that
Hi'kc'V is practised by the parties concerned. —
if.j Fish is an extraordinary woman ; and when
I sees acute lawyers , sharp-si ghted merchants ,
' (1 the reverend clergy waiting in anxious suspense
f the responsive hammerings of her sp iritual atlen-
laiils (,),(. raust enjoy her inward laug h with infi-
nite relish.
NkW Count erf kits.—New counterfeit 10's on
the Exchange Bank in Boston are in circulation —
So well (lone that it is difficult to distinguish them
from (he genuine. Ten dollar counterfeits also on
the Wrentham Bank , altered from 1's and tens on
the Newton Bank are in circulation. The altera-
tions are made by a chemical process, by which the
words and figures are abstracted , and a 10 put in
their place. They are well calculated to deceive.—
Thk Washington Monument.—The Managers
of the Washington National Monument Society have
adopted the following resolution :—
Resolved, That the peop le of the United States ,
either individuall y or by associations , be and (hey
are hereby respectfull y requested to take up collec-
tions throug hout the Union on the approaching An-
niversary of American Independence , in aid of the
great Washington National Monument now being
erected in the City of Washington.
Papers throug hout the Union will please copy.
Thk Cholera.—There have been a few cases
of cholera at Cincinnati , but the disease has not as-
sumed an epidemic form.
The authorities of Utica are taking the most effi-
cient measures for the prevention of the cholera in
that city. This is the onl y city in the State that lasl
year entirel y escaped this disease , a fact fairl y at-
tributable to the thoroug h sanatory measures there
adopted.—[Boston Journal.
Death Sentences.—William Ilanley, convict-
ed in 1'rovidence , of the murder of his wife , has
been sentenced to be hanged on the 15th day ol
November next. William D. Hancock , convicted
at Columbia , S. C.,is to be hung on the 12th of Jul y
nex t.
"The Second Washington. "—The Washing-
ton correspondent of the Boston Times say,-, that
Gi'n.iffay lor, in a conversation with a Pennsy lvania
member the other day upon the Tariff , spoke of ad
valorem as meaning valor, and specifics as meaning
specie !
, Loss ok Gold Dust.—The cabin of the barque
fortune ,.of this port , was broken open some i\xy
(luring last week , and a bag of gold dust containing
six or seven hundred'ilollars , was stolen therefrom.
Ihe gold was the property of a seaman who came
home in the.fortune on wages, and who placed it in
the care of the. captain for safe keeping.— [New
Bedford Standard .

FROM THE ABLE AND DISTINGUISHED
Dr. A. ncFariand,
Of the Insane Hospital , Concord, N. H.
We.are favored with the following truth-leaking
and convi ncing letter , as lo the virtue, of Dr. Thon.ai
Corh etts Highl y Concentrated Syrup of Sarsaparilla :
Gentlemen : Havi g directed and made use of the Com-

tlie Unit ed Society of '
Sha kers,somewhat extensivel y in
my practice,^ cheerfull y add my testimony to its valua-
ble qualities. In those depraved hal'its connected with
scro fulous diathesis , which we often find , but for which
it is difficult to prescrihe , I consider this Syrup pecu-
liarl y usefu l In chronic diseases of the skin , it may
be used 'with success, being well calculated for this class
of diseases. Being acquainted with the composition of
this Sv rup, I speak of it with more confidence.

Truths like these prove the efficacy of this invaluable
prep aration of Dr. Corbett !¦ It is not heralded to the
world by disgusting statements of cures which no med-
icine ever could effect, but it simp ly promises, (under
the approval of the ablest ph ysicians and chemists in
the country.) to cleanse the blood , heal the lum/s. change
a deprav ed system , cure all er up tion s of th e skin , dispel
diseases of th e liver , erysi pelas , rheumatism , salt rheum ,
dysentery, and give tone to an enfeebled am! dt/spepsica l
stomach .
That it will effect these cures perman ently , testimo-
nia ls are too abundant to be offered.
