CONTINUED FROM PAGE B:1 filled with many important issues including overcrowd- ing, water protection, taxes, affordable/workforce housing issues, education , budgets , interaction with the county boards to better serve our population , public health and safety, roads, water quality and conservation issues, just to name a few. As councilors, I think most of us work hard so that the decisions we make ultimately are in the best interests of the whole Town of Barnstable. It is the Town that provides most of the services and maintains the infrastructure that allows us to enjoy the unique qualities of living here. It canbe expected that with a Council of 13 representa- tives, there willbe differences and various agenda items that each of us bring to the table. In fact I believe that is what is vital in pursuing the best interest of Barnstable - that each of us can bring a different perspective from our Precinct constituents and our own knowledge base. In the beginning, most talked about the learning curve , maybe with some hope that we would reach the pinnacle of that curve sooner or later. For me, that curve contin- ues and I hope to continue to learn about your needs and ideas and from my fel- low Councilors, and to share my thoughts and ideas with them and you and with, the support of our dedicated and knowledgeable staff to move forward in a positive way to address the important issues before us. I continue to advocate for the creation of affordable workforce housing for our residents. We often hear the phrase 'brain drain" and of shortages of qualified employ- ees in all fields of endeavor. I believe that it is imperative we recognize that the supply of qualified personnel in the fields of teaching, medicine, technology, construction , environment , health care and the service industry for the Cape and Barnstable , which for many is the Hub of the Cape, is diminishing due to unaffordable housing. It seems that this year I have heardthisover anifoveragaini inmy work asCouncil Liaison tothePersonnel,Rousingand Golf committees and before the council as a whole. The Town has been devel- oped and all who live here, whether young families or , senior citizens, need thesej qualified residents to join our community. When we talk about the creation of hous- ing opportunities, it is also to allow our young people to return to the Cape to work and raise their families where they grew up. In the spirit of these endeavors, I hope that we will have your support and of the Council as a whole to approve the Affordable Hous- ing Overlay District , which will be another tool in our efforts. This plan will allow the development of housing opportunities in various loca- tions throughout the Town of Barnstable. I look forward to hearing from you about solutions and ideas for the future as we move ahead to enhance our community. No one person has all the answers; we can just work together with mu- tual respect and understand- ing to come up with the best solutions. Have a wonderful summer.
