Ever since Stop & Shop an- nounced plans to close itsYarmouthandDown- town Hyannis stores in favor of the huge super- store amileor two from downtown, elder citi- zens and other Hyannis center residents have been wondering where they would buy low- priced grocerieswithout having to take a long hike. 1996 Among the cuts ap- proved by the school committee this week is a gutting of the high school' s ACES program and EM. schooling. Both are programs targeted at high-risk students who do not succeed in regular classrooms... The cuts also slice the school' s guidance help in half. EARLY FILES ! yU,- ^ ^S S ! Along with the merged lots, Butler said the number of cub cuts will be reduced. There was also some dis- cussion about the "prob- ability if not certainty " of a median strip down Route 132 to prevent left-hand turns into the property. Butler said that issue had come up with Cape Cod Commission staff. It was also raised by town engineering staff at last week's meeting. Butler said that he does not foresee the need for any zoning variances , but a spe- cial permit is required. There is also a likelihood that the airport' s terminal expansion project will come into play as the Circuit City proposal goes forward , as there is a proposed back access from the Star City Grill property onto airport- controlled property. Butler said that there "seemed as if there would be a synergy"between the proj- ects. As part of its terminal expansion and reconstruc- tion project , the airport has identified alternative access options for airport users. Airport Manager Quincy "Doc " Mosby did not return a call for comment by press time. In past interviews, Mosby has discussed the possibility of a new access road linking the airport to Attucks Lane, which would create aby-pass for Route 132 traffic. Mosby has said there are some advantages to the airport in making that a public way as opposed to airport-only access. The same week that Star City Grill closed early last winter, Circuit City was bandied about as a potential buyer of the property. Noth- ing could be confirmed at the time and the "for sale" sign topped with "Available" remained at the front of the property. After some general com- ments about the presenta- tion, building commissioner TomPerrysaidit "reallyseems to be a well-designed site ... nothing glares at me." Circuit City... I do regret that our legislators did not see fit to elect someone with her experience as their president.Hopefully shewillget her chance as president before her current term ends. Also, let the record reflect that I did not attack the presi- dent or any other council members.Attacksarepersonal. I deliberately never use any names given that my intent is always demonstrative and never apersonal attack.IfIever did attack someone, similar to theletter published last month, it would be blatantly obvious. However, unlike the pub- lished letter, my attack would be factual and not fictional. Further, unlike the published letter, I could never go directly after afamily provider'sincome. That wasanespeciallylowblow. That type of mean-spirited personal attack behavior is generallyexhibited exclusively by non-professionals. The reaction to mypiece last month by one writer was not magnetic. It isbetter described as atomic. The thesis of that letter writer was unclear. I'm unsure if it was to announce my nomination for election to the town council or to simply question mymotive. Given that the latter ismore likelyand the former is more likely an end to justify the means, I offer the following explanation. Mymotive was simply stimu- lation. To paraphrase a term I read last month, I get paid a handsome fee by this news- paper every month to put a bunch of words together on this page. The purpose of my column every month for the last 12years is to earn that fee. I feel I earn it when I stimulate my readers. I guess I certainly earned that handsome sumlast month, didn't I? In parting, I wish to thank all of the residents of Precinct II as well as those of you from other sections of town for the encouraging commentsandthe caring thoughts that you con- veyed to my wife and I during the past several weeks. Finally for the record , this newspaper has a policy that prohibits us writer types from continuing to appear in the paper while run- ning for elected office. I honor and embrace that policy. Since I spend just about every workday in a city or town hall somewhere outside of Barnstable , for now I'll continue to declare that I am and will remain a candidate for a monthly column in The Barnstable Patriot newspaper. So.keep those cards andletters coming ! Unmagnetic response...
