Logo launches a
new era at Senior
Center

SOMETHING NEW - Barnstable
Senior Center Director Elyse
DeGroot prepares to unveil the
new Center logo featuring an
array ot seven circles to represent
the seven villages of Barnstable.
DeGroot wore a special sphere-
printed scarf for the occasion.
LAUDING THE LOGO-Carol
McLeod of McLeod Design,
who designed the new
logo along with partner
Mitra Edelhauser , shows
off the new, more modern,
Barnstable Senior Center
Logo. It was designed in
hopes of attracting Baby
Boomers to the center.
For
many months now
the Barnstable Senior
Center has been
chanting a unique man-
tra, according to director
Elyse DeGroot. "We've been
saying, 'The Boomers are
coming, the Boomers are
coming!'" she said. "Actu-
ally, the Boomers are here."
So is the new logo for the
Barnstable Senior Center,
aimed at attracting that
very Boomer audience.
After much deliberation it
was decided that the Center
would keep its original mon-
iker but upgrade the logo to
a hipper, new style.
The new logo was un-
veiled in dramatic fashion
following the presentation
of awards during the Boston
Post Cane celebration June
8 at the Center. "On each
table are seven pebbles ,"
said DeGroot , indicating
the array of glass beads
adorning the tables. "The
pebbles stand for the seven
villages of Barnstable."
With that , DeGroot
and logo designers Carol
McLeod and Mitra Edel-
hauser revealed the new
face of the Barnstable Se-
nior Center: seven various-
ly-sized sea-colored circles
along with "Barnstable
Senior Center: Programs
and Services for the 50+
Community."
"The seven circles rep-
resent the seven villages,"
said McLeod. "With the
large circle symbolizing
the circle of life, circle of
energy."
While the circles are
symbolic of the local area,
the individual colors were
chosen as they reflect those
of the surrounding sea and
marsh grasses.
The difference between
the old logo, a rendition
of the town seal, and its
predecessor is striking. The
new logo definitely bears a
much more modern flair. "It
will take some getting used
to," an attendee was over-
heard saying.
The logo will soon be seen
on Center stationery, litera-
ture, and business cards , as
well as a new Route 28 sign
that will feature a "ladder-
style" design to allow for
sign changes as activities
change. "I think it's going
to cause a lot of stir in the
community, " said DeGroot.
"Which is what we hope it
will do."
Along with the logo, the
Center is also planning
a major renovation of its
garden-level space that
will allow for more activity
rooms, exercise space , and
a health-screening clinic for
blood pressure checks and
flu shots.

SIGNS AND PORTENTS - The new home of Zion Union Church on
Attucks Lane likely moved closer to reality yesterday when the town
council was scheduled to vote on a request to spend $250,000 from
the Community Preservatio n Fund to acquire the existing church
building and property on North Street in Hyannis. The Lyndon and
Paul Lorusso Foundation will contribute the same amount, as well as
additional funds for operating expenses in perpetuity. The goal is a
museum "dedicated to celebrating the cultural and ethnic diversity
of the community and the rich history created by people of color on
Cape Cod. " "There 's a huge community landslide behind this thing,"
Councilor Harold Tobey said last week. "It's economically sound,
educationally sound, and morally sound. "
Where angels tread
"I feel sure there are a few
'angels' out there that will
help us out ," Barnstable
Land Trust Executive Di-
rector Jaci Barton said last
weeks in remarks quoted in a
BLTnewsletter.And it would
be "divine"if some good souls
came up with about $50,000
to reach the $805,000 needed
to "Save Bayview Farm" in
West Barnstable.
(The town council planned
a vote on appropriating an-
other $50,000 for the effort at
its meeting last night.)
June 30 is the deadline to
raise the remainder of the
funds , according to Barton.
Otherwise $439,000 in state
grants will be lost.
