EDWARD F MARONEY PHOTO FOND FAREWELL - For the first time in 26 years, the last day of school at Cape Cod Academy in Osterville really meant that for headmaster Tom Evans, who is retiring this month. He was cheered by students and staff who lined the corridors waving noisemakers Wednesday and told them, "I get up every single morning the same way each of you do - trying to do the best I can. The fact that you think that that' s important , I will remember. You are my family and I love you dearly." CONTRIBUTED PHOTO FISHING FOR FACTS - Cape Cod Academy senior Michael Bennie of Osterville stands by his winning project , "Development of Genetic Markes to Characterize Cod Population," at the Massachusetts State Science Fair. Bennie won a second place and received the $250 Optical Society of America New England Chapter award. Drivers tuned in to Bus Radio The drivers on nine routes where Bus Radio had a recent tryout produced not a single negative comment, according to Barnstable PublicSchools Transportation Director Sandy Gifford. "There were comments like, 'It was a defi- nite improvement in safety' and less noise,'" Gifford said of the two-week test program. "One driver never plays the radio at all. She had this on and the kidswere wonderful on the bus. They said, 'Wewere afraid to say anything. We thought you forgot and left it on.'" BusRadio approached the systemsometime ago with an offer to tailor radio programs for its school buses, presenting safety announce- ments and school news as well as music and commercials. "I've been on a bus, and it's really not very loud," said Gifford. "Drivers are not gonna turn it up loud. You have to hear the driver in an emergency." Gifford said she appreciates that the system "eliminatesthe driver searchingfor aradio sta- tion while they're driving. With radio stations today, you don't know what will come on." There are critics of the program. Tuesday's Boston Globe reported that Commercial Alert, an advocacy group based in Oregon , wrote to Gov. Mitt Romney that Bus Radio, which is headquartered in Needham , "would be intentionally interfering with the ability of students to read , pray, or do homework on the school bus." Interim Supt. TomMcDonald said the school committee will make the final decision. The bottom line, he said, is that "kids are listening to commercials every day on the radio, and (this) content is more appropriate than what they hear on the radio." Visitors inquire about McDonald Four school committee members and other interested partiesfrom East Providence drove to Barnstable Monday to talk with local town and school officials , and staff about interim Supt. Tom McDonald , who's one of three fi- nalists to lead the Rhode Island community's system. The visitors met with the district leadership team of principals and directors; stopped in at the Barnstable Horace Mann Charter School, Barnstable High and Hyannis East Elementary; and had lunch with members of the school committee and town council. McDonald will be interviewed in East Providence next week at a school committee meeting.
