Onward and upward Lady Raiders taking tennis tourney by storm By Kathleen Szmit Manwaring kmanwanng@barnstablepatriot.com A REALRACQUET-Madison DeMelloanticipates a shot from her Framingham opponents during her doubles match with teammate Jess Francis. DeMello turned insome impressive shots during the tournament play, helping secure a victory for the Lady Raiders. KATHLEEN MANWARING PHOTOS MUST HAVE FOCUS - Chealsey Giatrelis prepares herself against Framingham opponent Amanda Cohen during their South Sectionals tournament match on Tuesday. Giatrelisdominatedwithscores of 6-2 and6-3, helping the team advance to the semifinals. The Barnstable High School girls tennis team is on their way in the MIAA South Sectionals tourna- ment. On Tuesday the team notched yet another win in an undefeated season, taking Framingham 4-1. The number-one seeded Lady Raiders, now 20-0, were on top of their games dur- ing the afternoon match, securing a spot in the semifinals. In singles, Chealsey Giatrelis went 6-2, 6-3, and Jess Whelan had a double bagel with 6-0, 6-0. Once the Raiders' victory was imminent, BHS top singles player, Kate Donnelly, was retired in order to preserve her strength for the next round of play. "The match could have gone on a long while,"said BHSHead Coach, Hedley Smith, who felt it best to keep Donnelly in fighting form. In doubles matches Jess Francis and Madison DeMello proved formidable op- ponents for the Framingham girls, as did the dynamic duo of Lauren Donnelly and Kortney Kelley. At press time the Lady Raiders were scheduled to face fourth-seed Wellesley at the BHS courts, or at the Mid-Cape Racquet Club in South Yarmouth in in- clement weather. Smith feels the team has a strong chance of going all the way in the South Sectionals."Ifeel really confident ,"he said, watching from the sidelines on Tuesday. "We play one point at a time because if you start think- ing ahead you get in trouble." Smith at- tributes the strength of the team to long hours practic- ing, aswell as fo- cused attitudes. "If we play our best against Wellesley,"he said, "they'll have their hands full." A win over Wellesleysets up the women to play in the finals against the winner of the Dartmouth-Needham game. After that, it's on to States. Dynamic duo Donnelly sisters are aces on BHS team By Kathleen Szmit Manwaring kmanwanng@barnstablepatriot.com KATHLEEN SZMIT MANWARING PHOTOS SERVING IT UP - Lauren Donnelly makes aserve against Framingham in this week's MIAA Southeastern Sectionals tournament. Donnelly, a doubles player, and her sister Kate are two of the top players of the BHS girls' tennis team. A SUREFIRE HIT-Kate Donnelly, BHS girls' tennis team's number one singles player, prepares to lobaballbackatherFramingham opponent during a round in the MIAA South Sectionals on Tuesday. Two sisters at Barnstable High School are making quite a racquet on the tennis courts. Given the girls' tennis team's amazing undefeated season, you've no doubt heard of them. So have their opponents. Lauren and Kate Donnelly are by far two of the most intimidatingplayers on the girls' team. Though they wear the same uniform and play the same sport, however, the two players are vastly different. "Lauren is a more crafty player, very dedicated," said BHS girls' tennis head coach, Hedley Smith, who has known the girls for many years. "Kate is the fastest woman athlete I've ever coached." The two began their foray into the world of aces and deuces as children. Lauren was the first to pick up a racquet. "I started playing when I was 5, but I didn't get competitive until I was 7," she said while taking a short break from an afternoon practice. Kate followed in her older sister's footsteps but claims that moving to Cape Cod helped the two girls really hone their skills. "I've been playing my whole life," she said. "When we moved here, we got focused." The sisters credit their mother with encouraging them to pursue the sport. "Our mom wanted to [play tennis] but instead she ran track ," explained Kate, who enjoys tennis because it's not only a game of endurance, it is also a game that endures. "You can play forever, basi- cally." Lauren, with her straw- berry blonde hair pulled back into a shaggy bun, is part of a formidable doubles duo with Kortney Kelley. The cohesive pair is so in sync on the court their opponents rarely find them in a weak moment. Recently Lauren and Kort- ney helped the girls' team defeat Framingham as part of the MIAA Southeastern Sec- tionals tournament, a tourna- ment Smith feels confident about. "I think we could go the distance," he said. The tournament marks Lauren's curtain call at BHS as she graduated on June 4. "I love it here," she said. "I love playing on the BHS team. All the girls make it worthwhile." In the fall Lauren will begin classes at Emmanuel College in Boston where she will ma- jor in history and pre-law, and continue her tennis career. "They have a good tennis team," she noted. As the Donnelly remaining on the BHS team, Kate ac- knowledges that she will miss her teammate sister "a lot." As the top-seeded singles player on the team, Kate has a bright future. "Being the one who is the sophomore," said Smith. "Kate is probably the more pure tennis player." While Lauren approaches the game thoughtfully, plan- ning her next moves with her partner, the dark-haired Kate is often a blur of activity, sending the ball across the net with an intensity that catches her opponents off guard. One would think that with two sisters playing the same sport for the same team there might be a bit of sibling ri- valry. "Not really," said Kate. Added Lauren with a grin, "We fight over who's better. I'm the better doubles player and Kate's the better singles player." Both young women ap- preciate the sport they've come to love. "It's a good mental and physical kind of game," said Lauren. With the appreciation has come a good deal of sacrifice. "It takes a lot of practice and dedication," said Lauren, who came to practice just hours after her BHS graduation. "But we have a good chance of doing something," she said, referring to South Section- als. "Friends are going out at night and you go to bed early, but it's worth it." The Barnstable Middle School girls' softball team went out with a bang on Monday with a season-ending win against Plymouth. Given the 24-5 final score, it was more like the crack of bats. Tri-captain Lindsay Grover went four for four, including a nice double, four runs, and five sto- len bases. Grover also pitched the final game, notching eight strikeouts and her tenth win of the season. First-year catcher Avery Farnham was also one to watch as she rarely let a ball past her. At bat she also delivered , going two for two with three runs, two RBI's, two walks and five stolen bases. Allie Liimatainen, another tri-captain , kept close watch over first base along with teammate Keveney Pauze-Hender- son, while second base was manned by Rachel Lynn and Jacqui DiCicco. Final tri-captain Shaelyn Costello went three for four during the game with a double , two runs, three RBIs and two base steals. Defensively the team played well, with Harley Mills patrolling left field and Demi Miskiv and Rachel Kahelin in right center field. As always, Kristin Mo- ran kept the team's spir- its up, leading cheers and shouts for each batter. With the Plymouth drubbing, the team finished the season with a record of 10-2, best- ing other middle school teams on Cape Cod. "This is a group that doesn't know the word 'quit ,'" said head coach Ted Guazzaloca. "Best of all they have fun playing and that , truly, is what the game is all about." BMS pounces on Plymouth Winning ways at BMS Sportsmanship, strong bats make the difference By Kathleen Szmit Manwaring kmanwaring@barnstablepatriot.co^ ONTHEMOVE-Kyle Pedicinimakes his move, stealing third during the BMS-Plymouthgame onMonday.A run by Pedicini aided Barnstable in their win over Plymouth. 'A. COMIN' AT YOU - Dan O'Day sends one across the plate during Monday'sgame against Plymouth. O'Day and teammate Larry Faria kept Plymouth at bay, allowing just five hits during the game. It was a day of wild pitch- es and mixed-up players during the season-ending baseball game at Barnstable Middle School on Monday. When Plymouth arrived without its proper number of players, BMS stepped to the plate and, in a show of good sportsmanship, allowed Plymouth to use several of their players to even things out It was just the start of a rough day for the visiting team who fell to the Raiders 8-7. Joe Stanek kicked the hits off early with a single and a triple, as well as a quick series of stolen bases that brought in a run. Kyle Pedicini, Jon Rich and Will Rice also scored in the first inning. The initial upbeat mood of the game was tested when Paul Botello was hit by an errant pitch. In spite of an obvious mark on his elbow, the umpire declared it a ball, leaving Botello and Coach Wingatd stymied. Botello, swinging in spite of the in- jury, momentarily lost focus and struck out. Plymouth enjoyed a brief rally with hit batters of their own and errors on the part of BMS that led to a slight comeback. The Raiders soon re- covered , with Nolan Ryan smacking a strong double in the third , and Andrew McAtteer and Blake Blaze following with singles to complete the scoring. BMS held onto their eventual victory with solid defense. Larry Faria on the mound left Plymouth's ty- ing run stranded on third when he struck out the last two batters. Larry and Dan O'Day managed to hold Plymouth to ju st five hits during the intense match. In the end, Barnstable emerged victorious, ending the season with a strong 10- 3 record. Yesterday the team enjoyed a well-deserved ice cream party in Coach Wingard' s classroom at the Middle School before wrap- ping it up for the year. ¦ j - i jjp -g gg ~~~T^W~ -^
