POETRY.
The 5>esei-SCii Nest.
'Twas but a withered , worthless heap
Of d irt , and moss,and hair ;
Wh y then shonM thought and fancy keep
A busy vigil there ?
Yet, for some moments as I stood ,
And on it looked alone,
I could but think , inj nusins; mood ,
Where are i:s inmates gone t
Perhaps beneath some sunnier sky
They joyous sfci;; and soar;
Perhaps in sad c\)tivity
Eternally dep lore ;
- And, then , irqaginVion stirred ,
- Down to its lnddVi spring,
F~ r, far beyond hot* nest and bird ,
Thought spread h^r airy wing.
When from our tenements of elny,
' Where briefl y they tare shrined ,
Thoug ht, fancy, feeling, pass away—
Where flies the deathless mind 1
Either, from sin redeemed , it soars
On angel wing above ,
And the re its gratitude outpour?
In praise and joy and love ;
Or, exi led from the eternal source
When ce such al qne can flow.
It breathes, in accents of remorse,
Unu tterah|e woe.
ET REV. DR- BETIIDSB.
I love to sing when I am glad ,
Song is the echo of my gladness ;
I love to sing when I am sad ,
Till song makes sweet my very sadness-;
'Tis pleasant lime,
When voices chime
To some sweet rh yme in concert onl y ;
And song to me
Is company,—
Good company iphpn I.am lonely.
Whene'er I greet the morning li ght ,
My song goes forth in thankful numbers ,
And "mid the shadqivs qf the ni ght ,
I sing me to my «elcaYne slumbers.
My hearf is stirred
By each glad rard
Whose notes are heard In summer 's bowers ;

Extract from a letter of an eminent physician in
Worcester Co., Mass., a member of the Massachusetts
Medical Society.
Winchendon, Jan. 16, 1849.
"Dr. Stephen Jewett :
Dear Sir—I speak with eonfidence, having used tht
Elixir in my own practice , and / unhesitatingly recommend
it as a safe, valuable and highly useful fami l
y medicine.
I consider it indeed a. family medicine, and a ream

for Coughs, Colds,a
*nd that dreaded disease the• Crottpt
for which it is f a r superior to any other preparati on'^-
fore the public.
I have used your Health Restoring Bitters in my prac-
tice, and have found .them very serviceable in Dyspep-
sia, Humors , General Debility, and particularly in Baml-
ual Costiveness. I consider it one of the best remedies
in use. Yours, &c. IRA RUSSELL, M. D." "
From one of the most eminent physicians in tb»
State of New Hampshire.
Temple, N. H., Jan. 17, 1849.
"Dr. S. Jewett :
Dear Sir—I have examined your Pulmonary EIW\
arrd am well satisfied that it merits the full confidence
of the community, as being what it purpor ts to be, »»
efficient and saferemed y for all the diseases to wnutf
the respiratory organs are subject. It may he used wit
much more safety than almost any other article offer''
for this purpose , inasmuch as the danger of impairc
action of those organs, the frequent and leg itirn»t e rej
suits of most other remedies of the class, by j-eison »
their opiate character, is, by this, entirely obviate d.
The physician who should meet with it in fam»ie'¦ <
would find it a ready assistant, by which his own " j
in the dispensation of medicine would be obviated , Mi
his efforts for relief essentially aided.
With much consideration , your ohed't servant.
