with humor and verve, thus mak-
ing her character entertaining.
She takes the stage by storm in
her energetic turn as the driven,
compulsive young genius.
Dee Nelson is appropriately
infuriatingin the role ofMarcus's
adoptive mother, the high-pres-
sure corporate executive Adele.
She can't stand her daughter's
strange behavior and inability
to operate successfully in the
outside world, and misses every
opportunity to meet her need
for understanding and compas-
sion. Nelson delivers a strong
performance.
Marcus's father, played by Ste-
phenRussell,isaformerfirefighter
who spends his time looking for
fires from his rooftop. Marcus
remarks, "Sometimes he calls in
a fire before anyone knows it's
happening." It isatellingdescrip-
tion, as he is trulysensitive to his
daughter'splight, even though he
lacks the intensity to do anything
to helpher.Marcusexplains,"He's
not disappointed, he just has no
expectations of me," Russell is
funny and warm and wonderfully
entertaining, as always.

all of hisvariousroles inthe show.
As the not so innocent Mormon
missionary,themelodramatic sci-
entist Dr.Yakunin, and invarious
other roles, Barkhimer lights up
the stage with his larger than life
comedic talent.
The android is played by the
delightful Julia Chan. She mes-
merizes the audience with her
wide-eyed portrayal of the not-
quite-human Jenny Chow. Ben
Haas is a funny and easygoing
Todd, the one real-life friend of
Jennifer Marcus.
There are some beautiful and
touching scenes in this show,
amidst all the laughs and action.
When the android Jenny Chow
finally meetsthe Chinesemother
of Jennifer Marcus, reality sets
in. The use of a Mandarin dialect
coach,Joey Chan,givesthescene
greater depth and integrity.
PlaywrightJones,whoisa2006
Pulitzer Prize finalist, strikes an
honest chord in his drawing of
the sometimes strangely solitary
world of the exceptionally gifted.
The concept of a rich, stimulat-
ing, and highlyfunctional "inside
life," or inner world, that has no
interface with which to connect
to the outside world is a common
experience for this uncommon
group.Ashisprotagonist Jennifer
Marcussurmisesinherdiscussion
with the Defense Department,
"Your satellites can't communi-
cate with your missiles; that's a
no-brainer!"
There is a young quality to the
show. At times it seemed a bit
like an "After-School Special,"or
Nickelodeon production, with an
added smattering of self-loath-
ing and foul language. Yet Jones
managestoput together avibrant
set of characters and a story with
enough meat on itsbones to keep
the audienceinterested,engaged,
and entertained.

While Warren includes recipes for favor-
ites such as vanilla and chocolate , he isn't
afraid to take risks as he delves into ice
cream territory certainly not for the faint
of palate. Cranberry Ice Cream, Pomegran-
ate Sorbet and Pineapple-Lime smoothies
don't sound too bad, but how about Cheese
Gelato. Tomato Basil Sorbet, or Jalapeno
Ice Cream?
Through Warren's unique book readers
are free to indulge in their passion for dairy
delights while considering new directions
that passion may take, all in language that
is easy to digest.
Though I know folks won't stop visiting
Four Seas, it wouldn't be the least bit sur-
prising to find out that people are giving
some of Warren's recipes a whirl in their own
kitchens. Now, I'm not sure about Jalapeno,
but , if you'll excuse me, I've developed an
intense craving for some Chocolate Cheese-
cake Ice Cream with Melba Sauce.
The CompleteIdiot's Guide to HomemadeIce Cream.
