READY FOR ACTION - Barnstable's Mike Devlin (14) searches for an open man during a recent varsity lacrosse game. Barnstable defeated Medford on Monday,
earning a trip to Andover for a round one match in the MIAA tourney.
The BHS varsity boys lacrosse team was
anything but lax Monday in its Division I
East preliminary match, earning a spot in
round one and leaving Medford stunned.
Barnstable was hot out of the box with an
offensive charge of 7-0 early on. Tim Flynn
was the front man for BHS, scoring eight
goals, three of which were part of the open-
ing seven. Flynn also had two assists in the
18-10 defeat of the Mustangs.
Chad Crocker was also one to watch as
he turned in an impressive goal in spite of a
crowded field with minutes to go in the sec-
ond period. Combined with Flynn's tallies,
the team went into the half with a 10-3 lead
Brett Serriello and Crocker came away
with four goals and one assist each, while
Mike Devlin earned three goals and two as-
sists. Cam Lacey and Mike Horn also scored
for BHS.
BHS defense was not to be trifled with,
either, as "Nasty" Nate Camelio and Corey
Oberlander worked their magic, maintaining
a stride that has kept them victoriousfor
more than two weeks now.
Contributing to the Raider success was
their strong control of face-offs (an 18-4
margin). Justin Bearse and Devlin kept the
ball in BHS possession. Goaltender Brendan
Bearse also turned in another stellar perfor-
mance.
Monday's game marks the last home game
for the Raiders, who will travel to Andover
on Saturday for a first-round match.
Windless,
foggy Figawi
Weather didn't
dampen spirits in
annual race

THE FOG BEFORETHE RACE-At 7 a.m. Saturday Hy-Line's Grey Ladydisappears
into the fog just off Kalmus Beach, setting a tone for this year's Figawi.
Early Saturday morningmarked
the 35th
annual Figawi sailboat
race. The thick fog blanketingthe
area wasless of aproblem than the
lack of winds.
Charlie McLaughlin,media rep-
resentative for the race, credits
navigational gear with helping
vessels maneuver the fog. "It's far
less of a challenge than years ago
when there was no GPS," he said.
"Light air was a major challenge
for the race committee."
Indeed,the lack of windscaused
a number of boats to drop out of
the race, or finish past the official
cutoff time of 6 p.m. McLaughlin
explained that about 30 percent
of entrants did not complete this
/ear's race to Nantucket. "About
50-55boats did not finish or elected
bo withdraw and motor over," he
said. "It was directly related to the
ack of wind."
Many boats taking part in the
race to Nantucket found them-
selves traveling at speeds of 5.5
snots or less, taking far longer to
:raverse the waters than in previ-
ous years or on Monday, when
finer weather prevailed. "We had
beautiful conditions on Monday,"
saidMcLaughlinwhonoted that it
took the boat he wason morethan
sixhours to reach Nantucket and
just over two to return to Hyannis.
"There wasadramatic differencein
weather conditions. The windwas
behind us coming home."
In spite of light winds and early
morning fog the event, which also
included several dinnerparties and
aclambake,was asuccess. "It was
held. It was wonderful. It was a
grand time," said McLaughliu.

The Falmouth game marks the
conclusion of atriumphant season
for the Raiders, who were 18-0 for
the season and 6-0 for the league.
Coach Hedley Smith attributes
their success to hard work and
dedication.
"For the younger players, they
have had to do a lot more work

hard together."

mances once again were Kate
Donnelly, and Jess Francis and
Madison DeMello in doubles.
At press time the team was

Smith has high hopes for the
girls."I really think that we've got
arealgood chance of advancingin

side of the draw," he said. "If we
do play to our potential, I think
we could get to the finals."

Girls remain on top of
their game
By Kathleen Szmit Manwaring

The
Barnstable Middle School soft-
ball team has improved its record
to 6-1 with two victories last week
over Mattacheese and Plymouth.
The girls were at home against Mat-
tacheese on the 22nd,turning in a stellar
performance. Barnstable exploded out of
the box with 10 runs in the first inning.
Timely hitting and excellent looking
made the difference for the Raiders.
Lindsay Grover got things started with
a walk on four consecutive pitches. Gro-
ver quickly stole second before advanc-
ing to third on a line-drive single from
teammate Avery Farnham. Loading the
bases was Shae Costello on a walk.
Caroline Murray brought in runs from
Grover and Farnham, while Harley Mills
once again walked the bases full. A well-
placed single to center field from Allie
Liimatainen brought in Costello and
Murray.
The team continued their hit parade
throughout the game, also playing well
defensively, making their presence felt as
they dominated the field,walking away
with a tidy 17-7 win.
On the 23rd the team traveled to Plym-
outh where the girls again reigned su-
preme. After a smart leadoff single from
Grover, the floodgates were open. The
girls continued to rack up hit after hit,
bringing the score to 11-4 in the second
inning.
Defensively the Raiders were spot-on
with Harley Mills, Demi Miskiv and Brit-
tany Lepore playing beautifully.
Plymouth was simply out of their ele-
ment against the powerful BMS team
who continued to advance the score
with each inning. When the dust settled
after nine innings, the final score was
21-8, bringing the Raiders to 6-1 for the
season.
Next up for the team is a trip to
Mashpee this afternoon.
Stellar softball
at BMS
Tuesday was a frustrating day
for the players and coaches of
Barnstable Middle School's base-
ball team as the boys suffered a tough
7-6 defeat to Harwich.
In spite of several chances at a big
inning, the team simply couldn't get the
one hit that was necessary to take the
lead.
Joe Stanek and Paul Botello each had
two hits for BMS while Kyle Pedicini,
Nolan Ryan and Conor Chandler also
connected with the ball in solid efforts
for the team.
Alex Pernick and Zach McAvoy
pitched well in the match, holding
Harwich to only six runs. Unfortunately
defensive errors allowed Harwich to eke
ahead and take the game.
Barnstable attempted a late-game
rally in the seventh but proved no match
for the tough Harwich pitchers.
The boys travel to Mashpee this after-
noon for their next game.
