Hyannis truly is the hub of Cape Cod, and we are working every day to earn their trust in the integrity and efficacy of our organization. With the strengt h of a membership base like ours, advocacy for is- sues that are important to our membership allows us tremendous impact. Lastly, we found that people who ex- pressed the most satisfaction with member- ship were those who are most involved in the organization and help to shape what we do through the many opportunities for interac- tion with other members of the chamber, be it a Small Business Luncheon , placing advertising in a Chamber publication , or volunteering at a Chamber event. Like all things in life, you get out of this organiza- tion what you put into it. Those members who make it a point to get to know fellow members beyond a couple of Business After Hours receptions are more successful in cultivating those relationships and more successful in their businesses. Now, we all know the inherent pitfalls of surveys. Those trite expressions about the veracity of statisticians come to mind. So, take the aforementioned information with a grain of salt . However, did you know that a grain of salt used to be wort h quite a lot? So much so, in fact , that people were paid with salt, and hence the word "salary"was born.Just a little factoid, from me to you. The writer is executive director of the Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce. Chamber notes... KEEPING WATCH - Tova and Lola keep an eye on the 17lh hole water hazard at the Ridge Club where geese were sighted. Tova, Vedda and Lola, Border Collies, are the key players in Fowl Play Goose Patrol, operated by Greg and Cokie Hamm of West Barnstable. The pups rid properties of geese harmlessly by giving chase. CONTINUED FROM PAGE A:8 touch the geese." It is also cost-effective because it pre- vents the geese from destroying grass, as they will eat it to the roots. The pooch patrol method isworking so well that just the sight of Greg has sent geese flying. "The geese at one site, they see me and they 're gone," he said. To keep the geese away the Hamms bring the dogs on random visits at vary- ing times, avoiding predictability on the part of the geese. Once the birds have left , the customer is placed on an on-call maintenance program. "This is the first year we've really expanded ," said Greg. "People are curious. " Clients are also pleased. Tom Colombo of The Ridge Club in Sandwich is very impressed with the effectiveness of the dogs. "They 're great ," he said. "Imme- diately we noticed results. We had a fair amount of geese that were becoming a nuisance and were unfazed by other tactics we tried." Colombo notes that the use of three dogs, plus the kayak the Hamms bring with them, is the ideal force against the geese. "The geese get used to one dog," he said. "With three , the dogs surround the pond. It'sbeen great. We're definitely planning on bringing them back in the fall." Meanwhile , back at the farm , the Hamms tend their organic garden, train other dogs to herd sheep and try to find some downtime in between it all. "Winter is when we socialize," Cokie said with a laugh. "Greg is an amazing cook. We in- vite friends and he prepares a five-course dinner in February. It's something nice we do in the dead of winter." Until then , it's all about the dogs and the geese that need chasing. "They just love to do it," said Cokie of her brood. "They are sojacked to work. This is their reward. " For more information about Fowl Play Goose Patrol, call 508-375-0300 or email fowlplaygps@veri:on. net. Gone to the dogs...
