Therese Mur- ray is highlighting about half a million in funding for Barnstable-based initia- tives that have survived in the Senate 's version of the budget for fiscal 2007. In a press statement, the senator highlighted $125,000 for a Cape Cod Healthcare workforce development plan; $121,000 for the Vietnam War Veterans of Cape Cod & Islands outreach center; $100,000 for Centerville 's Cape Head Injured Persons (CHIP' S) House; $150,000 for the Duffy Health Center for services to homeless people; and $45,000 for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cape Cod. The package would include an incremental income tax rollback, property tax relief for seniorsandveterans, anda sales tax holiday weekend. Odd man out again As the only member of the Cape delegation to support the Cape Wind Associates wind farm, state Rep. Matt Patrick is used to standing alone back home. Thisweek, he became the only Cape legislator not to sign aletter asking Gov. Mitt Romney to put a new National Guard unit charged with intelli- gence-gathering at Otis Air National Guard Base. If you'd like to argue the point with him, you can take advantageofPatrick'ssummer office hours inEast Falmouth, where he'llbe available by ap- pointmentfrom9a.m.to4p.m. Monday through Thursday. Call508-540-6308. Perry says no to seat belt requirement State Rep. Jeff Perry joined the slimmajority that rejected legislation to make failure to wear a seat belt a primary traffic offense. "While I continue to en- courage people to wear their seat belts, as I always do, I willnot vote to mandate this through government regula- tions and increased govern- mentalpower,"the Sandwich Republican declared in a press statement. Last month, Perry picked up a Small-Business Guard- ian Award from the National Federation of Independent Businesses. His ownership of asmallbusiness combined with what the Federation de- scribed as his "commitment to lower taxes and minimal government regulations " prompted the honor. A new reason to oppose animal fights U.S. Rep. Bill Delahunt, a foe of staged animal fights, is making the point that the threat of Avian flu should convince everyone of the dangers of such events , especially given that many of the birds used in cock fightsare transported across borders. First in his class State Rep. Cleon Turner of Dennis doesn't represent any part of the town of Barnstable , but he's good enough to send us news of his doings anyway. Already the first in his freshman class of legislators to guide a home- rule petition to passage, he's now the first of his peers to pass statewide legislation. Turner's bill allows towns to set up affordable housing trust funds without having to get approval on Beacon Hill. Dear Friend, It all stalled when a new patient came to my office. A debate on Cape Wind will follow the screening. Patrick: the one & only State Rep.Matt Patrick was the only Capelegislator to sign aletter from 68other members of the state House and Senate protesting provisions of the Coast Guard Reauthoriza- tion Act that would make it tougher for Cape Wind to get its turbines approved. "Let the process go forward and if Cape Wind survives based on its merits, it should not be subject to the arbitrary whims of the Governor," Pat- rick stated in a press release. That release also included the result of a State House News Service statewide poll that found 71 percent of re- spondents were not opposed to a wind farm in Nantucket Sound. Opponents of the project said the poll had few Cape respondents.
