WIDE TELE CAST
Television, currently a big-city
pet, may soon be available to rural
ureas by the use of stratovision. A
request for a television channel for
the first commercial stratovision
station Is now before the federal
communications commission.
Television and FM radio waves
travel in a straight line and for all
practical purposes stop ut tho hori-
zon. TIHB means that television
broadcasts from the higheBt practi-
cal tower erected on the ground
can bo received only from 35 to 50
miles away.
The strutovlslon system simply
puts the untenna in transmitter In
an airplane flying in lazy circles
high above tbe earth. The waves
sent out from this airborne antenna
blanket the earth's surface like a
great inverted Ice cream cone und
cover an area approximately 500
miles ucross or oquul to about the
combined urea of New York, Penn-
sylvania and New Jersey.
Tho offeelveneBS of Btrutovlslon
in providing television over a
wide area wus demonstrated when
a stratovision airplane flying at
25,000 feet in the vicinity of Pitts-
burgh picked up telecasts of the
Republican National Convention
from WMAR-TV in Baltimore , 200
miles away, and rebroadcust the
television In an area with a radius
of 250 miles about Pittsburgh. Re-
ports from this public demonstra-
tion flight and from other earlier
experimental flights showed recep-
tion In nine states. ™
First studies of the stratovision
system were made late In 1644 and
early in 1945 by C. E. Nobles, 30-
year-old Texas born engineer and
originator ot the system.
Although at present application
is being made for only one strato-
vision station to be located above
Pittsburgh, a coast-to-coast network
linking New York and Hollywood
has been projected. This would re-
quire eight planes flying about 400
miles apart. By adding six planes
to this system for added coverage
In the Southeast and Northwest,
television would be provided for
78 percent of tbe nation's popu-
lation.
