The sta ndard of Ijeaut y in women , (says the Two
World*,) diff ers widel y in different countries. The
(i reeks admire the slender and gracefu l Conn ; the
Moors value theni fgr their obesity. Indeed , in
mimy par ls of Africa they are fattened up for the
inntriiponia l market , and the value of their charms
corresponds in a precise ratio with their wei ght.—
But this contrariety of tastes does not* app ly to na-
tions onl y. It is almost equ all y va rious in the indi-
viduals which compose them ; and this is one of the
great oonsei'Vittivus of luirnj ony and peace in tlie so-
cial relati ons of the sexes. It is a happy and .wi se
ordi nation of Providence. Were all j ud gments alike
irrtbis respect , the siune obj ects, comp arativel y few ,
that approach the beaiwdeal , would be soug ht for
by all , ami a strugg le that wo uld convulse societ y

great diversify of fo rm , complexion , size a nd char-
acteristic mann er is the in finite , variety of tastes.
Imagination deeply imp lanted in the breast of man ,
often in a pa rticular case ,endo ws with the attribute *
of loveliness , forms and featu res that the world call
not fair , and perhaps those faces a re the most tonch-
ing ly interesting and ejj pi fssiyp that lire pot com-
formable in ou tline to the strict standard of beauty.
Vivacity often lights up featu res the least attrac-
tive «t first sight , and expressio n , wheth er pensive
or intcle c-tual, steals away the . hearts and sways the
ju dgment of men. Thus beauty, except in its ar-
tis tic phases, can rarel y be reduced to a uniform
standard , But such is the hi gh estimatio n which
men hold of this cj nalit y,~s,o associated is it with the
inspirations of the poet , and with music 's soft and
impassioned strains , that we can not wonder that
most vfqmqn gene rall y attacli to it s possession so
mu ch importance—more particularl y as it, feeds two

prized because it is rare and transient. The refore,
to adorn themsel ves by all the artfi cial aids of dress!
is not only-wi accordance with th p dictates of a nat-
ural refinement and taste , but also of a policy well
adapted to acco mp lish their aims, Jt is not to be
condemned if it transcends not its due lim its , and ii
the more estimable and sterling qualities are not
sacrificed to its indul gence.
LADIES' DEPARTMENT.
Wa havo a friend-ran excellent husband and dot-
