OBITUARIES
Desiree June Allen, 87
Hyannis - Desiree June (Cro-
skery) Allen, 87. died May 4, 2006.
Mrs. Allen was born in Fulking,
England. She came to the United
States as a child, living most other
life in New England.
She graduated from Scarsdale
High School in Scarsdale, N.Y.,
and from Traphagen School of
Fashion in New York City, where
she majored in fashion design.
Many of her designs were in the
field of ballet , and she designed
the costumes for the well-known
"Moon Ballet," performed in New
York City in 1937.
She enjoyed her years on Cape
Cod, and especially loved painting,
swimming and collecting drift-
wood.
Survivors include a daughter,
Leslie Curtis; a sister, Patricia
Falconer; two grandsons; two
great-grandchildren; a niece; and
a nephew.
Laurence McKenzie
Bearse, 68
Fallston , Md. - Laurence McK-
enzie Bearse, 68, died at home in
Fallston, Md., on May 20, 2006.
Born in Centerville, he served as
editor of the high school yearbook
and as a disc jocke y at a local radio
station.
He was a graduate of Williams
College and the Harvard Graduate
School of Education and attended
L'Ecole Francaise at Middlebury
College.
He enlisted in the Navy in 1961.
During his naval career, he served
asAssistant Naval Attache in Paris,
France (1966-67) and asDefense and
Naval Attache in Antananarivo , the
Democratic Republic ofMadagascar
(1976-1979), where he survived an
assassination attempt.
Mr. Bearse was a destroyer com-
munications officer, taught French
at the U. S.Naval Academy, served in
the Cuban Quarantine,Vietnam and
Thailand , and headed the Naval In-
vestigative Service in Puerto Rieo.
He began training military at-
taches in 1979. After retiring from
the Navy in 1987, he served as As-
sociate Dean, Joint MilitaryAttache
School. In 1999, he was inducted
into the Attache Hall of Fame
Mr. Bearse and his second wife,
Linda Graham, moved to Fallston,
Md. after his retirement in 1999. He
continued his passion for garden-
ing while also traveling extensively
to art museums in America and
Europe. The couple 'slove of classi-
cal music led them to concert halls
locally and around the world.
At home, Mr. Bearse treasured
time with his step grandchildren ,
watching Orioles games on TV
and reading to students at a local
elementary school. He also returned
to Cape Cod frequently to help
his parents with the garden, swim
at Craigville Beach , and enjoy ice
cream at Four Seas in Centerville
and pizza from Craigville Pizza.
In addition to his wife , he is
survived by his parents , Lau-
rence Weston Bearse and Jean
McKenzie Bearse of Centerville;
daughter Sarah Francoise Bearse
of Washington, D.C., first wife Re-
nee Michelle Douteau; three step
children. Elizabeth A. Waring of
Austin, Tx., Nathalie A. Smith of
Forest Hill, Md., and David Harry
of Cornish, Maine; a sister, Deborah
McLister of North Kingstown, R.I.;
five step grandchildren; a niece; a
nephew; two great-nieces and one
great-nephew.
A funeral service was held at
Ruck Towson Funeral Home in
Towson, Md.

Hilda Culkins, 98
Hyannis - Hilda (O'Donnell)
Culkins, 98, died May 12, 2006 , at
Eagle Pond Rehabilitation and Liv-
ing Center in South Dennis.
She was the wife of John W.
Culkins, who died in 1974. They
were married for 37 years.
Mrs. Culkins was bom in Souris,
Prince Edward Island, Canada. She
was a graduate of St. Mary's Con-
vent in Souris, attended Prince of
Wales Teachers College and taught
on the island for several years.
She later became a resident of
Boston and was a 1937 graduate of
Emerson Hospital Nursing School
in Concord, where she became a
licensed practical nurse.
She worked at Emerson Hospital
and at Nashoba Valley Hospital
in Ayer. She lived in Concord and
in Boxborough before moving to
Cape Cod.
Survivors include two sons, John
F Culkins of Hyannis and Ernest W
Culkins of Kingwood, Texas; four
grandchildren; and eight great-
grandchildren.
A funeralMass was celebrated in
Holy FamilyParish in Concord Cen-
ter. Burial followed in St. Bernard's
Cemetery there.
Eugenia Fortes, 94
Hyannis -Eugenia Fortes, 94, of
Hyannis died May 19, 2006. Please

William G. Jenks Jr., 78
Hyannis- William G. Jenks Jr.,
78, died May 17, 2006 , at Cape Cod
Hospital.
Mr. Jenks was born in Beverly
and graduated from Walpole High
School and Suffolk University.
He held many jobs and recently
retired from Capabilitiesof Hyannis,
where he was a van driver for the
disabled.
Survivors include two sons, Chris-
topher W Jenks of Chantilly, Va.,
and Rodrick C. Jenks of Marshfield;
two daughters, AlisonM. Campbell
of Walpole and Wendy A. Farrell of
Foxboro; two brothers , David of
Searsmont, Maine, and Jonathan
of Brookings , S.D.; two sisters ,
Priscilla Parkinson of Norfolk and
Miriam Hobart of Middleboro; and
seven grandchildren.
He was also the father of Jeffrey,
who died in 1993.
A service was held at John-Law-
rence funeral nome in Marstons
Mills, followed by burial.

Jadvyga Lendraitis, 91
Hyannis - Jadvyga Lendraitis,
91, died May 17, 2006, at Essex
Pavilion.
She was the wife of the late Wal-
ter Lendraitis. They were married
in 1936.
Mrs. Lendraitis was born in Lat-
via, raised in Kaunas, Lithuania,
and graduated from high school
before marrying.
During World War II, she and her
husband moved to Germany. In
1951 they emigrated to the United
States and settled in Boston,where
she worked as a seamstress until
retiring to Centerville in 1976.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking,
knitting, caring for her grandchil-
dren and fishing. She also enjoyed
contributing to the Lithuanian
American community.
Survivors include three daugh-
ters, Reda Simonaitis of Mashpee,
Irene Uzgiris of Niskayuna, N.Y ,
and Kristina Nichols of Braintree;
a brother, Petras Stasiukonis of
Kaunas; six grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; and many
nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated
at Our Lady of Victory Church in
Centerville.

Roger C. Leonard, 78
Marstons Mills - Roger C. Leon-
ard, 78, died May 15, 2006, at Cape
Regency Rehabilitation & Nursing
Center in Centerville.
He was the husband of Catherine
(Harris) Leonard.
Mr.Leonard wasborn inOsterville
and attended local schools.
He served on submarines in the
Navy during World War II. After
his discharge, he attended Boston
University.
Mr. Leonard was a licensed
plumber, retiring in 1993.
He was an active member of
Osterville VeteransAssociation for
many years.
Besides his wife, survivorsinclude
a son, Jack T. Leonard of South
Hamilton; abrother, PhilipLeonard
of New Ulm, Minn.; a sister, Andrea
Leonard of Yarmouthport; three
granddaughters; and several nieces
and nephews.

Barbara Merrick
Osterville - Barbara Merrick of
Osterville and Locust Valley, N.Y,
died May 12, 2006, at her home in
New York.
She was the wife of the late Her-
bert D. Merrick.
Survivors include three children,
Frederic D. and Barbara L. Mer-
rick and Deborah M. Brisbane;
five grandchildren; and one great-
granddaughter.
A memorial service was held at
St. John'sEpiscopal Church in Cold
Spring Harbor, N.Y.

Robert P. Steele, 85
Hyannis - Robert P Steele, 85,
died May 13, 2006, at Essex Pavilion
Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
in Hyannis.
He was the husband of Catherine
A. (Reardon) Steele for 60 years.
Mr. Steele was born in Chicago,
and raised and educated in Denver
and Chicago. He was a graduate of
Loyola High School in Chicago and
earned a bachelor's degree from
Notre Dame University in 1942.
He served in the Army during
World War II and was honorably
discharged with the rank of ser-
geant in 1946.
He was an electronics supervisor
for ITT Semiconductors, Transa-
tron and Unitrode for many years.
He also worked in the same capacity
for CBS and the Mills in Lowell.He
retired in 1985.
A longtime resident of Reading,
Mr. Steele moved to WestYarmouth
in 1992 and Hyannis in 2004. He had
also lived in Melrose and Maiden.
He enjoyed skiing, woodwork-
ing, reading and spending time
outdoors. He also enjoyed taking
long walks on the beach.
Besides his wife, survivors include a
son,Robert C. Steele of Sagamore; five
daughters, Susan Steele of Jamaica
Plain,Cathy Steele ofHartsville,Tenn.,
Judy Meelia of Walpole,Mary Steele of
Sandown, N.H., and Nancy Paulding
ofYarmouthport;seven grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held at
Hallett Funeral Home in South
Yarmouth. Burial followed in
Chandler Gray Cemetery in West
Yarmouth.

Grace C. Stewart, 85
Hyannis - Grace Claire (Roche)
Stewart, 85, died May 19, 2006, at
her home.
She was the wife of George H.
Stewart Jr., who died in 1992. They
were married in 1946.
Mrs. Stewart was raised in Sand-
wich and moved to Hyannis, where
she graduated from Barnstable
High School in 1938. She was a
member of the Glee Club and the
Wide-Awake Club.
She worked as a typist and book-
keeper at Camp Edwards during
World War II, and was a home
health aide in the 1980s, caring for
the elderly. She especially enjoyed
her children , grandchildren and
great -grandchildren.
Survivors include her children,
Nancy Dane of Winthrop, Timothy
Stewart of Winchester, Tenn., Jack
Stewart of Barnet, Vt., Patricia Bell
of Hyannis, who was her caregiver,
Kevin Stewart of Marstons Mills, and
Carolyn Stewart of Hyannis;22 grand-
children; 13great-grandchildren; and
many nieces and nephews.
A service was held at Doane ,
Beale and Ames Funeral Home in
Hyannis. Burial was in Beechwood
Cemetery in Centerville.

Jessie L. Stringer, 101
Osterville - Jessie L. Stringer, 101,
died May 17, 2006, at Cape Regency
Rehabilitation & Nursing Center.
Mrs. Stringer was born in
Osterville.
She recently received the cap-
tain'scane from the historical soci-
ety for being the oldest livingnative
of the town. She graduated from
Barnstable High School and earned
a degree in secretarial science from
Burdette College, Boston, in 1924.
Shewasasecretary for several law-
yers, as well as for the Wianno Club
for several years and Massachusetts
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Children for many years.
She was an active member of
the United Methodist Church in
Osterville, and a member of the
choir for many years.
She enjoyed reading, dancing,
social clubs, travel and spending
time with her grandchildren. She
was a lifelong member of Order of
the Eastern Star.
Survivors include two sons, Peter
and Paul Stringer, both of Osterville;a
daughter, Jean Stephens of Wilming-
ton.N.C.;abrother, James H. Lewisol
Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 12 grandchildren;
and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was also the mother of the
late Sally McDonald.
A graveside service was held at
Hillside Cemetery in Osterville.

Theresa M. Whelton
Hyannis - Theresa M. (Lynch)
Whelton died May 11, 2006, at Royal
Megansett Nursing Home in North
Falmouth.
She was the wife of the late Daniel
A. Whelton for 35 years.
Mrs. Whelton was born and
raised in Hyde Park and lived in
Dedham for more than 40 years
before retiring to the Cape in 1978.
where she lived in Marstons Mills
and Hyannis.
A graduate of Faulkner Hospital
Nursing School in Boston , she was
a nurse at the VA. Hospital in West,
Roxbury before her retirement.
She had a great sense of humor
and loved spending time with
friends and family.
Survivors include two daughters,
Patricia M. Anderson and Bridget F.
McSorley, both of Marstons Mills;
five grandchildren; and three great-
grandchildren .
