VILLAGE IMPROVEMENT
ASSOCIATION
The Village Improvement Asso-
ciation has voted to submit n peti-
tion to the Selectmen for an organ-
izational meeting of the West Barn-
stable Fire District June 8.
Fire Chief Harry Atwood offered
the aid of the Department In cover-
ing open wellB, if any home owner
asks for it . The Improvement Asso-
ciation went on record as warning
the inhabitants of the village to
cover such wells.
The Association voted also to pay
for the installation of a water heat-
er in the grammar sthool , report-
ing that the School Department
had agreed to provide the heater.
Mrs. Roger Carlson, chairman of
the money raising committee, an-
nounced that a bean supper wili be
held June 4 for the benellt of the
Fire Department. President Carl
Salo presided. The meeting was
held May 19.
LADIES' GUILD
There will be a meeting of the
Ladles' Guild at the West Barn-
stable Congregational Church next
Tuesday evening, May 31 , at 7:30
o'clock. The members are asked to
bring a grab for the grab bag, ror
the Fair, which will take place
next August, also some article for
the auction, which will take place
after the Strawberry Festival to bo
held next month, the exact date to
be given next week.

A lovely bridal shower was re-
cently tendered MI BB Jeanelte Wlr-
innen at the home of Miss Elsio
Smith, Hyannls. Other hoHtesseH
were MI BB Patricia Rood and Miss
Prlscllla Demone.. The gifts for
Miss Wirtutien were attractively
wrapped and placed in u huge May
basket. Refreshments including a
lovel y cake made by Mrs. Hood,
were served. Other guests present

banquet, given by the West llarii-
stable Brownies , Troop 1, was held
last Tuesday evening, May 17, In
the vestry of the West Parish Con-
gregational Church, A delicious
dinner was served by tho Brownie
Committee, of which Mrs. Louis
Woodland was chairman , assisted
by Mrs. Dorothy O'Neill , Mrs. Hetty
Johnson und Mrs. Lois Kni ght . Tho
menu consisted of baked ham ,
esoalloped potatoes , green salad,
Ice cream and cookies. Tables
wore attractively decorated with
miniature Maypoles and quaint lit -
tle dolls dressed in paBtel colors,

Brownies made May baskets and
In each was an individual pansy
plant. The Brownies' baskets were
filled will) candy. Mrs. Kendrlck
Sears introduced the Brownie Com-
mittee and the Girl Scout Commit-
tee, who were Invited guests. Each
child introduced her mother. Miss
Betty Woodland said Grace. Be-
tween the courses Brownie songs
were sung and a short Brownie cer-
emony was held to welcome six
new glrlB Into the troop. Sandra
Knight recited an original poem.
At the end of the ceremony the
mothers were presented with at-
tractive flower prints , which their
daughters had made tor them

senting the Brownies, surprised the
leaders, Mrs. Kendrlck Sears and
Mrs. Norman Cahoon, with large
May baskets. The affair was the
first ever to be held with this par
ticular group and proved to be very
successful. The members of the
troop are Carol and Sally Pye, Ei-
leen and Kathleen Merrlman, Kath-
erine Kelley, Mabel Bumpus, Judy
Carlson, Ruth, Sandra and Patsy
Rose, Sylvia Prada, Betty Wood-
land , Maija Robblns and Diane
Paananen. The new members are

SCOUT DANCE
Last Saturday evening, under the
supervision of MrB . Myro n How-
land, Mrs. Henry Groop and Mrs.
Lillian Leeman, the Girl Scouts
held a dance at the Community Cen-
ter Building. The hall was very at-
tractively decorated with May pa-
per streamers and flowers and the
Scouts served homemade cookies
and soft drinks.

A yachtsman, Mr. Scudder was a
founder and past commodore of the
Hyannls Yacht Club. He was a

Hyannlsport Yacht Clubs.
In the field of music he conducted
a family orchestra, sang with sev-
eral quartets which were well
known; he helped to form the
school band in the Barnstable High
School and instructldn courses ln
all the schools of the town. He

Tho railroad management pro-
vided a delightful fashion show,
arranged by the R. 11. White Com-
pany of Boston. While tho models
ptiBHod through the curs, their COB-
tunicH were explained from the
head car through tho public address
system which reached each oar.
At Wareham the whole town waB
out, or BO It Beumed, to greet the
train at the station. The Wareham
High School Bund was there. The
crowd thronged tba station plat-
form. Somo had climbed to the
station roof, onset and Buzzards
Bay gave good turn-outs, too. At
each stutlon from there on the train
waB heartily welcomed, When the
Btout engine --cranberry-rod—pulled
into HyannlH , It was greeted by the
Barnstabl e High School Bund and
interested townspeople, Two mem-
bers of tho Band held a bright
ribbon across the track tor the
locomotive lo break through.
The train on HB maiden run
carrlod 318 passengers. ThiB figure
included Mr. Baldwin of the Com-
pany, also .1. Frank Doolen, vice-
president of tho Road, and Harold
W. Quintan, passenger traffic malin-
ger. They and the models return-
ed to Boston on the "Cranberry "
on its run ourly the next morning,

"Cranberry" Train
The third annual outlti g of the
Youth Fellowship of the First Bap-
tist Church of Hyannls will be
held overthe holiday weekend at
Camp Farley ln Mashpee, It was
announced today by the Rev. E.
Gage Hotallng. The young people
will leave for their outing on Fri-
day evening and will return Mon-
day evening. Funds for tho trip
were made available through the
recent presentation of the three-act
comedy. "Aunt Susie SliontB the
Works."
Sports of all kinds will be fea-
tured during the day including
softhall . swimming and boating. In
the evening there will be an ama-
teur program, dancing, hot dog
roast and marshmallow roast.
There Is a possibility that a tele-
vision set may also be available
for the young people. On Sunday
morning there will be an outdoor
worship Rervlce, nntl on Sunday
evening the "Fellowship meeting
with a hymn sing and discussion.
The closing banquet will be held
on Monday afternoon, to which all
the old members of the Fellowship
are especially invited,
